GARRETT — The IHSAA Class 2A 7th-ranked Churubusco boys basketball team traveled to Garrett to take on the Railroaders Tuesday night, pulling out a 65-60 win.

From the start of the game, the entire crowd knew it was going to see a show between two of the top players in the NECC — Churubusco senior Paul Forman and Garrett senior Justin McCoy.

Neither player disappointed in the first half. Forman led ’Busco with 15 points in the first half but picked up his second foul early in the second quarter and didn’t see action again for the rest of the first half.

STATE FINALS: Three grapplers prepare for the last dance

February 19, 2015

COLUMBIA CITY — For one Columbia City wrestler, Friday night’s opening round of the IHSAA State Finals will be a return trip; for the other two grapplers it will be a new experience; but for all three it will be the next step on the road to a possible individual state title.

All three have already stamped themselves as one of the top 16 wrestlers in the state in their weight classes. Friday night’s elimination round at Banker’s Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis will cut that number in half.

TAKIN' A TRIP: Cornerstone girls headed to National tourney

February 18, 2015

MERRIAM — The Cornerstone Lady Warriors Basketball team will be taking a trip this March with the goal of bringing home a national title.

“It’s not a perfect analogy, but this basketball program and ones like us all over the country are sort of like Christian Homeschool “AAU” teams,” said Coach Adam Griner.

INJURY-PLAGUED: Lady ’Cats drop title

February 17, 2015

SYRACUSE — How do you win a sectional basketball title with three starters sitting on the bench with injuries?

To borrow a phrase from baseball, you swing for the fences and hope some hits clear the wall. The Whitko Lady Wildcats basketball team swung for the fences at the IHSAA Class 3A Wawasee Sectional against Tippecanoe Valley Monday night.

None of the Whitko shots cleared the wall though, and the Lady Vikings pulled away to win a sectional crown, 62-36.

WOODBURN — Playing for a sectional championship is something all basketball players dream about. Playing against IHSAA Class 2A defending state runner-up Canterbury is usually not part of that dream.
With most of the area sectional championship games being postponed due to bad weather, the Churubusco

Lady Eagles took on the wind, snow and Canterbury Cavaliers Saturday night at the Woodlan Sectional.
The Class 2A No. 2 Cavaliers, led by Whitley County native Darby Maggard, proved to be all they were billed to be, posting a 67-44 win over the Lady Eagles.
