JUMPING BACK IN

With the end of Spring Break for Whitley County high schools, athletics will begin in force next week. Churubusco’s Adrian Springer is shown competing in the long jump. Churubusco’s track team will return to action on Tuesday when they host Heritage High school at 5 p.m.

VOLLEYBALL: Eagle boys go 1-3 at Zionsville

ZIONSVILLE — The Columbia City Eagles’ boys’ volleyball team traveled to Zionsville High School for their second tournament of the season, emerging with a 1-3 record on the day.

The young squad of Eagles opened pool play against Noblesville in a repeat of last week’s match at Bishop Chatard. The Eagles tied game one at 3-3 with a service ace by Daniel Boren.

CLASS CHANGE: Whitko to be 2A for next two years

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana High School Athletic Association has announced the new classifications for IHSAA member schools in several sports for the next two school years. Locally, the Whitko Wildcats will be the only school affected by reclassification, as the Wildcats will move from Class 3A to Class 2A

ALL-STAR CLASSIC: Maggard to play

MARION — Whitley County resident and Canterbury High School basketball standout Darby Maggard has been named to the North girls’ team for the Indiana All-Star Classic to be played at Indiana Wesleyan on April 19.

Maggard, a 5-foot-5 guard, has signed to play next year at Bellmont in Nashville, Tenn., averaged 28.6 points per game and led Canterbury to the Class 2A state championship game as a senior. Canterbury won Class A state titles her freshman and sophomore seasons and was also runner-up in 2A when Maggard was a junior.

BAND OF BROTHERS: All-American Lefever brothers have Whitley County roots

HERSHEY, Pa. — The Lefever brothers, senior twins Connor and Reece, and younger brother Riley, made NCAA history when all three advanced to the finals of their weight classes at the NCAA Division III national wrestling championships.

This marks the first time in NCAA history that three brothers have been named All-Americans in the same year, and the first time that three brothers have advanced to weight class finals in the same year.

LETTER OF INTENT: ’Busco’s Barkley headed to Defiance

CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco High School Senior Beau Barkley has chosen to continue his football and golf careers at Defiance College in Ohio.

Barkley, who played four years of football, four years of golf and four years of basketball, opted for Defiance over Anderson University, Hanover College, Trine University, St. Francis University and Ferris State University.

WHITKO GRAD: Irwin named NAIA All-American

WINONA LAKE — Whitko grad and Grace College junior Logan Irwin capped a successful season by being named to the honorable mention for NAIA All-American team and a second team selection for the National Christian College Athletic Association All-American squad.

CC boys open volleyball season

INDIANAPOLIS — The Columbia City High School Eagles’ boys’ volleyball team traveled to Indianapolis for its season-opening tournament at Bishop Chatard High School, recording a 1-3 record for the tournament.

The squad, consisting of three seniors, one junior and the rest sophomores, opened pool play against Fishers, a new team in the IBVCA membership.

The Eagles struggled to put together points until the end of the first game, when they rallied from a 21-16 deficit to win the first game, 26-24.

SOUTH WHITLEY— Baseball is the American pastime and basic fundamentals are still at its core. If a team can hit the ball and play good defense it can win a lot of games. The 2015 Whitko Wildcats baseball team fits perfectly into that mold. Whitko will be strong at the plate, defensively very sound and if the ‘Cats can find some more pitching they just might be a threat come sectional time.
