NORTH VS. SOUTH: Whitko All-Stars selected for soccer challenge

Three Whitko High School girls soccer players were selected to compete in the 4th Annual Indiana Elite North vs. South All-Star Soccer Challenge. The game is slated for Nov. 8 at Danville Community High School’s Warrior Stadium. Pictured are Whitko’s three players, from left: Leighandra Goodman, Mikayla Findley and Heather Bryan. Goodman will play in the sophomore division at 3 p.m., Findley will play in the junior division at 4:45 p.m. and Bryan will play in the senior division at 6:30 p.m.

SEMI-STATE RESULTS: Lady Eagles barely miss trip to state

FORT WAYNE — Columbia City’s girls cross country team wasn’t predicted to make it out of the sectional race two weeks ago.
Much to their competitors’ surprise, the Lady Eagles made it all the way to semi-state — almost to state.

FORT WAYNE — At a juncture in Columbia City’s 39-0 dismantling of Fort Wayne South Side in the opening round of IHSAA Football Sectional 20, Eagle Head Coach Brett Fox could be heard telling his players to “Win with class.”
The Eagles did just that, keeping the ball on the ground and pulling the starters after a single series in the second half of the game played on the Archers’ field that could have been a lot more one-sided than it was.

WILDCATS BETTERED BY BRAVES: Whitko falls to Bellmont

DECATUR — Bellmont handed Whitko a season-ending loss in the opening round of sectional action Friday night, 24-20.
Despite a strong standing by the Wildcats, the Braves rallied to score 15 points in the fourth quarter for the win.

EAGLES FALL: Busco has emotional end to season

CHURUBUSCO — After a long season wrought by a series of ups and downs, both on and off the field, the Churubusco Eagles’ football season came to an end Friday night after a stinging loss to Woodlan, 42-14.
It was the first game of the season the Eagles truly appeared to be outclassed against a superior opponent.

PERSONAL RECORD: Former Eagle running for St. Joseph College

Former Columbia City cross country runner Brooke Werstler competed for Saint Joseph College in the Great Lakes Valley Conference meet Oct. 11. Werstler placed 11th overall, and was 3rd for her team, and ran a career personal record of 19:15.

'SWEPT AWAY': Lady Eagles edged out by Bluffton

BLUFFTON — Churubusco’s Lady Eagles faced off against a dominating Adams Central Thursday during the class 2A volleyball sectional invitational hosted by Bluffton. Churubusco was swept away in an uneventful three game series falling 25-12, 25-12 and 25-19.

STIFF COMPETITION: Columbia City falls to Bellmont in sectional opener

GAS CITY — Columbia City’s girls volleyball team faced stiff competition against Bellmont Thursday at the Mississinewa Sectional. Ultimately the Lady Eagles were swept aside by the Lady Braves, giving Bellmont the win toward its 10th straight sectional crown.Host Mississinewa improved to 28-2 with a rout of Norwell in the opening round of the 3A Volleyball Sectional.

'FOCUS IS A MUST:' ’Busco Eagles to face off against Woodlan

CHURUBUSCO — Hoping to extend their five-game winning streak into this Friday, the Churubusco Eagles face off against the 6-3 Woodlan Warriors in the 7:30 p.m. sectional opener. ’Busco lucked out this year, drawing its sectional match up at home. Currently, the Eagles are ranked 16th in Class 2A AP Media Poll, as well as being ranked 186th in the state.

FORT WAYNE — Columbia City opens sectional play Friday at 7 p.m. against South Side, a team Eagle Head Coach Brett Fox says is “big, athletic and aggressive. “They are just like us, their record doesn’t show much, but they play in the very tough Summit Athletic Conference,” Fox said. “The numbers don’t show it, but they are a good team.”
