WAWASEE TOURNEY CHAMPS: ISMS seventh-grade boys take win

SYRACUSE — Indian Springs Middle School’s 7th grade Eagles boys’ basketball team used team defense and strong team play to win the Wawasee tournament, downing Milford 40-9 and Manchester 37-25 to take the title.
In the morning game, the Eagles took the court against Milford Middle School.

TRC VICTORY: Whitko girls grab

WABASH — Whitko’s girls basketball team picked up a Three Rivers Conference win over Northfield Saturday, 37-28.

The Lady Wildcats came from behind, after facing a 13-5 deficit at the end of the first quarter.
Whitko scored 10 points in the second to make the halftime score 17-15, in favor of Northfield.

EAGELS WIN: Col. City holds off DeKalb, 52-46

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s boys basketball team held on for a 52-46 win over DeKalb Saturday to improve to 3-1 in the Northeast Hoosier Conference.

After a fourth-quarter comback put DeKalb within four points with less than two minutes left on the clock, the Hazen brothers, Brachen and Parker, both threw down momentum-stealing dunks to seal the win.
Columbia City opened the game with a 8-7 lead behind four points apiece from Parker Hazen and Mason Coverstone.

OSSIAN — The last weekend of the wrestling regular season is reserved for conference tournaments.
The Columbia City Eagle wrestlers traveled to Norwell High School for the final Northeast Hoosier Conference wrestling tournament. The Eagles took two weight class championships on their way to a third place finish.

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s girls basketball team has made its way into the Associated Press’ weekly Top 10 poll this week, sitting at No. 9 in Class 3A.
The 16-4 Lady Eagles suffered their first loss in a 9-game win streak on Saturday, falling to Class 4A No. 4 Homestead, in a game that was closer than the final score showed.

The Lady Eagles were within five points of Homestead in the second half, eventually falling 62-50 after fourth-quarter free throws.

WILDCATS DOWN: ’Busco tops Whitko in close match, 39-32

CHURUBUSCO — Host Churubusco and visiting Whitley County rival Whitko split the 14 bouts in Thursday night’s Senior Night matchup right down the middle, with each taking seven wins.

The difference came in the premium points awarded for pinfalls.
The Eagles scored five pinfall wins with the Wildcats picking up two pins, as the host Eagles gave Coach Sam Reisen his 100th career dual meet victory, 39-32.

LOGAN IRWIN: Nets game-high 17 in Grace win

WINONA LAKE ­— Grace’s men’s basketball team used a solid defensive effort to hold Mt. Vernon Nazarene 21 points below their season offensive average in a 69-53 win on Tuesday.

The Lancers (16-5, 6-3 Crossroads League) have now won six of their past seven games.
The Grace defense forced Mt. Vernon misses on its first eight field goals attempts to start the game. The Cougars took nearly five minutes to get on the scoreboard, and managed just five points over the opening 10 minutes.

RAILROADERS DERAILED: Eagles down Garrett on senior night, 45-20

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s wrestling team ended the dual meet portion of its season with a 45-20 win over the Garrett Railroaders on Columbia City’s senior night recognition.

The Railroaders took four of the first five bouts, but the Eagles responded by going on an eight-bout run to take the match. Bouts started at 182 pounds where Dylan McClure squared off against Beck Davis. After a 3-3 tie at the end of the first period, Baker went on to score a reversal and a near fall in the second to take a 7-3 win, putting the visiting Railroaders up 3-0.

'Busco boys and girls down Fremont

CHURUBUSCO — The Churubusco boys’ and girls’ teams swept a pair of home basketball contests with Fremont on Tuesday night.
The boys took an early lead against Fremont and then began and ended the second half with runs to take a 71-43 win and go to 14-1 on the season.
The girls squad decided the game in the fourth quarter with a 27-10 outburst to down the Fremont girls 73-48.

Kessie ties record in Whitko victory

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko is one of the more storied boys basketball programs in the northern part of the state of Indiana. For a player in today’s era to add his name to the record book at Whitko would require a pretty significant accomplishment.
Whitko senior Cole Kessie added his name to the pages of Wildcat history Tuesday night. Kessie tied the school record for most three-pointers in a game (7) and Whitko hit free throws late to knock off Adams Central 72-68.
