Whitley Co. track teams move relayers forward

All three Whitley County boys’ track teams will be sending both individuals and relay teams to next Thursday’s IHSAA Marion Regional competition by virtue of their top four finishes at Thursday night’s Sectional meets.

Columbia City and Whitko teams competed at the Wayne High School Sectional, while the Churubusco Eagles traveled to Fort Wayne North Side for their meet.

Homestead took the team crown at Wayne with Whitko placing fifth and the Columbia City boys taking sixth, while Churubusco claimed sixth place at North Side.

Whitko’s boys golf team suffered a 170-182 loss to Canterbury this week at Sycamore Golf Club.

Leading the Wildcats was Danny Zawlocki, who scored a 42.

Canterbury’s top player was Trevor Uhl, who shot a 39.

Whitko’s Will Peters was one stroke away from his teammate with a 43, and Cole Bechtold shot a 44.

Matt Hathaway shot a 53 for Whitko.

Tim Gensch finished in 60 strokes.

Col. City routs Whitko in sectional

Columbia City girl’s tennis team defeated Whitko in the second round of sectionals last night with a team score of 4-1.

No. 1 singles player, Rachel Flauding was the only loss, but played a very close match.

The score was tied in the first two sets 6-2, 2-6.

Then in the tie breaker game, she fell to her opponent 2-6.

No. 2 singles player Aubrey Wright won her match with a score of 6-1, 6-0.

Katie Doerhmann defeated her Wildcat opponent 6-0, 6-0.

No. 1 doubles team Macie Hinen and Sydney Ford won with a score of 6-1, 6-0.

Bellmont take a win over CCHS girls

Columbia City girl’s softball fell to the Bellmont last night with a score of 5-7.

In the top of the first inning, an error on the Eagle’s part allowed the Braves to score.

Bellmont was also able to hold the Eagles from scoring during the first inning. In the top of the second inning, their first out was at first base.

Quick thinking was used by catcher, Bella Krieg as she threw to third base after a bunt was hit to get the Eagles their second out.

Lady Eagles win sectional opener

Columbia City’s girls tennis team topped Wawasee in the opening round of sectional play Wednesday night at Warsaw.

The Lady Eagles took a 4-1 victory and will advance to play Whitko tonight in the sectional semi-final. The Lady Eagles’ lone loss came in the No. 1 singles match.

Rachel Flauding fell to a tough opponent, Katy Ashpole, 6-1, 6-1. In. No 2 singles, Columbia City’s Aubrey Wright won 6-4, 6-0 over Jada Antonides.

Eagles head into NHC match with wins

Columbia City’s boys golf team is prepped and ready for this weekend’s Northeast Hoosier Conference match after a host of victories.

Wednesday night, the Eagles traveled to Whispering Creek Golf Course to face NHC foe New Haven, picking up their fifth conference victory this season.

The Eagles hosted and defeated DeKalb Tuesday night, and beat out all conference opponents at the Leo Invitational Saturday to place second behind Bishop Dwenger.

Softball, baseball sectional action set to begin

Indiana’s baseball and softball teams are gearing up for sectional play that begins next week.

Whitko’s baseball team is the lone sectional host.

The Wildcats are hosting a field of eight teams: Wawasee, West Noble, Tippecanoe Valley, NorthWood, Lakeland, Farifield and themselves.

Facing off in the first game at Whitko are Wawasee and West Noble Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. On Thursday, Tippecanoe Valley takes on NorthWood at 5:30 p.m.

Whitko begins sectional play Friday against Lakeland at 5:30 p.m.

Whitko baseball downs Rochester, 3-2

Whitko’s baseball team picked up a Three Rivers Conference victory Wednesday night over Rochester, 3-2.

The Wildcats faced a 1-0 deficit in the first inning, and went on a three-inning drought before finally scoring in the fourth frame to tie the score.

Wildcat Jared Craft reached home plate on a single by Ethan Nicodemus.
Rochester fired back in the bottom of the fifth inning to take back the lead, 2-1.

Whitko wasn’t ready to give up the game, however, scoring two runs in the seventh to take the 3-2 win.

Conference Champs

Indian Springs Middle School’s golf team took home the NELMSC conference title at Raccoon Run Golf Course Friday night.

Despite a tough field and poor playing conditions, the Eagles battled their way to the win, scoring a 174 to beat second-place Plymouth by five strokes. Garrett Roehling lead the way with a 42.

Spencer McCammon fired a 43, Nick Decker had a 44, Lawson Hawn carded a 45 and Zach Harker had a 47. “This is what we’ve been working for all season,” said coach Tommy Baldwin.

Eagle golf downs DeKalb

Columbia City’s boys golf team continued its winning ways, beating DeKalb at Eagle Glen Golf Course in Columbia City Tuesday night.

The Eagles took a 157-174 Northeast Hoosier Conference win to improve to 4-2 in the NHC and 10-2 overall.

Leading the Eagles was Cameron Slavich, who scored a 36.

Tyler Green shot a 40, Spencer Klimek had a 37, and Trent Murphy scored a 41. Rounding off the scoring was Max Dryer with a 45.
