Some Whitley County residents are questioning Columbia City High School’s black uniforms in many sports, such as football, basketball and cheerleading.

Columbia City’s football team is expected to return to the traditional maroon color this season.

Instructional league wraps up

Columbia City Parks Department’s four-year-old instructional T-ball league concluded Wednesday.

The team was led by Steve Shoda, a Columbia City High School assistant coach, as well as Eagle players.

Columbia City’s boys golf team had its end of season awards night Tuesday.

The award winners were, from left: Most Improved Player, Matt Kumfer; Season Low Average, 1st-Team All-Conference and Co-MVP, Tyler Green; Co-MVP and 2nd-Team All-Conference, Spencer Klimek; DeVol Award, Tanner Daniel; Mental Attitude Award, Cameron Slavich; Coaches Award, Matt Benedict.

Eagle football falls in semis at Pike

INDIANAPOLIS — Columbia City’s 7-on-7 football team ended its season on a high note by making the semifinals of a tournament last weekend.

The Eagles made the semi’s of Pike’s “Let It Fly” 7-on-7 tourney.

Overall, Columbia City was 5-2 on the day.

The Eagles beat Triton Central and Evergreen Park, an Illinois school. The lone loss for Columbia City in pool play was to NHC-rival East Noble.

In the first round in the afternoon, the Eagles beat Brownstown Central. In the quarterfinals, Class 6A Lafayatte Jefferson was dispatched by Columbia City.

’Busco Bash Turtle Days Champs

South Whitley’s U14 softball team won the ’Busco Bash Turtle Days softball tournament by defeating the hosts 9-2, Kendallville 9-6 and Huntington 8-2.

Eagle football squad falls in 7-on-7 finals

KENDALLVILLE — Even with a youth movement on the team, Columbia City’s football squad has shown a great deal of achievement in a tournament this summer.

Playing seven-on-seven football, the Eagles advanced to the finals of a 16-team tournament at East Noble last week.

Columbia City lost in the finals of the tournament to New Haven.

Garrett was the first foe for the Eagles. Columbia City fell to the Railroaders, but won its next five games. The Eagles beat Churubusco, DeKalb, Concordian, Carroll and Woodlan.

Hudgins most senior county football coach

Though only in his fifth year at Columbia City, Eagle Head Coach Randy Hudgins is the most senior football coach in Whitley County.

With the resignation of both Churubusco’s Lee Etzler and Whitko’s Wayne Swender, many will be looking to Hudgins to lead the way for Whitley County this fall.
