SECTIONAL TITLE: First since 2011

COLUMBIA CITY — Saturday night’s IHSAA Columbia City Sectional final had all sorts of offense; 3-pointers, both from shots from behind the arc, and the old-fashioned way. There was a dunk and driving acrobatic shots, but in the end, it was Columbia City’s defense that gave the Eagles their first sectional title since 2011 with a 47-40 win over the Norwell Knights.

Columbia City's and Churubusco's boys basketball teams are headed to sectional championship games.

Columbia City beat Eastbrook Friday night to play Saturday in Columbia City at 7:30 p.m. Columbia City boys basketball players are asking fans to wear black to the game.

Churubusco beat Woodlan Friday night and will face Canterbury Monday at 7 p.m.

SECTIONALS: Semi-final games are tonight

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City and Churubusco’s boys basketball teams are looking for trips to the sectional title games in semi-final contests tonight.

Columbia City, which is hosting its own sectional, will take on Eastbrook in tonight’s early game at 6 p.m., which will be followed by the Norwell-Bellmont game at 7:30 p.m.

GIRL'S BASKETBALL: Whitko awards girls hoopsters

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s girls’ basketball team closed the books on another successful season with an awards program Thursday night at Whitko High School.

Head Coach Brandon Bradley recounted team and individual highlights of the 2014-15 season in which the Lady Wildcats broke or tied several records.

BASKETBALL: Boys set for Friday semi-finals

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City and Churubusco’s boys basketball teams are set for sectional semi-finals on Friday night.

Columbia City, which is hosting its own sectional, will take on Eastbrook in Friday night’s early game at 6 p.m., which will be followed by the Norwell-Bellmont game at 7:30 p.m.

Columbia City (17-7) and Eastbrook (14-8) have not played each other in the regular season, but have similar opponents in Norwell, Mississinewa and Whitko — all with the same results.

WRESTLING: ISMS grapplers take Crestview Invite

HUNTINGTON — Indian Springs Middle School’s wrestling team claimed the Crestview Invitational tournament championship on Saturday.

Indian Springs went undefeated, beating Woodside 66-6, Adams Central 34-33, Riverview 33-21 and downing Southern Wells in the championship round, 37-24.

Indian Springs’ closest match was with Adams Central, a team that had beaten ISMS previously in the season.

WHITKO SEASON OVER: Wawasee use third quarter to run away with 71-59 win

LIGONIER — Just as Whitko’s girls basketball season was ended by Wawasee, the boys fell to the Warriors in sectional play as well.

Whitko opened sectional play at West Noble Tuesday night, falling to Wawasee, 71-59.
The Wildcats played a competitive game in the first half, but a third-quarter offensive slump cost the ’Cats the game.

EAGLES ADVANCE: Col. City too much for Indians in sectional opener

COLUMBIA CITY — For the Columbia City boys’ basketball team this year, the recipe for success has been pretty simple — establish the inside game and every thing else will follow.

In Tuesday night’s opening game of IHSAA Columbia City Sectional 23, the homestanding Eagles did just that, exploiting a height advantage on both ends of the floor to down the Mississinewa Indians, 70-45.
