4 to 1: Lady Eagle netters top Whitko

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s girls tennis team played host to Whitko High School Monday night at DeVol Field.

The Lady Eagles took wins in all matches but one, winning by a 4-1 score.

CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco’s Eagle baseball team used an outstanding pitching performance by Jacob Howe and just enough offense to send the Hamilton Marines down to a 5-0 defeat in the opening game of the the 2015 Northeast Corner Conference baseball tournament Monday night at Churubusco.

Howe faced only 23 batters, two over the minimum, while pitching a one-hit shutout of the Marines. Howe also recorded 13 strikeouts in the seven innings.

TRACK: Col. City boys run at Goshen

GOSHEN —Columbia City’s boys’ track team competed in a cold and rainy Goshen Relays Saturday. The Eagles competed in the small school division placing 14th out of 20 schools with a score of 41.5 points.

The Eagles were paced by two first-place finishes. In the sprint medley relay, the Columbia City team of Heath Atkins, Noah Judd, Tim Hearld and Andrew McFarland took the win in a time of 1:39.5.

13 TO 9: ’Busco baseball downs West Noble

LIGONIER — Churubusco’s baseball team took a 13-9 win over the host West Noble Chargers Friday evening.
The Eagles used a strong offense, highlighted by two four-run innings to down the Chargers.

West Noble broke on top, getting a single run in the bottom of the first inning. Churubusco came back to put up four runs in the top of the second to go up 4-1.

CONCORDIA GOLF INVITATIONAL: Col. City golf takes third

FORT WAYNE — No. 16-ranked Columbia City took third at Saturday’s Concordia Golf Invitational at the Foster Park golf course.

The Eagles shot 312, placing behind Leo and Bishop Dwenger, who both scored 301. When the tie couldn’t be broken on the fifth golfer’s score, the top five for Leo and Dwenger went out for a one-hole playoff to decide the winner.

TURTLE TOWN CLASSIC: ’Busco girls host invite

CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco’s girls track team hosted the Turtle Town Classic invitational Saturday, despite blowing rain and cool temperatures.

The host team placed fifth in the Black division, comprised of smaller schools.

Columbia City’s Elise Cormany (left) and Regan Decker (front), leap at the start of the 400-meter dash at the Turtletown Relays Saturday in Churubusco. Cormany placed third and Regan took fifth in the event. There were 23 schools at Churubusco High School for the event. Columbia City placed second in the Gold Division (big school). Whitko came in second and Churubusco placed fifth in the Black Division (small school).

Col. City survives cold start, tops ’Busco

COLUMBIA CITY — A slow start by Columbia City’s Lady Eagle softball team and patience at the plate by the visiting Churubusco Lady Eagles put Columbia City in an early hole against the visitors, but scores in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings let Columbia City rally to come away with a 6-3 win Friday night at Morsches Park.

The normally dependable Columbia City pitching struggled early giving up back-to-back walks to start the game. A single loaded the bases and another walk forced in the first run of the game for Churubusco.

12-9: ’Busco softball takes win over Chargers

LIGONIER — Churubusco’s Lady Eagle softball team banged out 13 hits and used a six-run second inning to take a 12-9 win at West Noble Thursday night.

With the score tied 1-1 after the first inning, Churubusco came to bat in the top of the second inning and pushed across six runs to go up 7-1.

AKRON — Whitko’s girls tennis team picked up a conference win at Tippecanoe Valley High School Thursday.
The Lady Wildcats got wins in all matches but one to take a 4-1 victory.

Delaney Keirn picked up a singles win in a long match against Valley’s Whitney Haneline. Keirn won the first set 6-1, but fell in the second 6-4. Keirn won the final tie-breaking set in extra points, 7-3.

BUTLER — A back-and-forth game between Churubusco and South Adams ended in with an Eagle victory...
