Leo edges Col.City linksters by two strokes

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s girls golf team lost a narrow home contest to Leo Thursday.

In their last match-up before the NHC meet, the Lady Eagles shot an even 200 on their home course.

Visiting Leo had 191 to earn the victory.

Cheyenne Johnson led the way for Columbia City with a score of 46, which tied Leo’s Anna Feldman for the top score of the meet.

Taylor Daniel had 49, and Macenzie Lane had 52. Courtney Bacon and Allison Yoder had 53 and 62, respectively, for the remainder of Columbia City’s scores.

For the year, the Lady Eagles now hold a 4-9 record. Leo is 12-3.

’Busco tennis falls to Northrop

CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco’s boys tennis team dropped a home contest to Fort Wayne Northrop Wednesday.

The visiting Bruins beat the Eagles 4-0.

In No. 1 singles, ’Busco junior Luke Lillmars lost to Northrop’s Alex Stavretis in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.

At No. 2 singles, Eagle junior Landon Lillmars dropped a straight-set match to Mike Ankenbruck, 6-2, 6-1.

In No. 3 singles, Churubusco’s Cody Luttman fell in a straight-set match to Gavin Neyman by a final of 6-2, 7-5.

Lady ’Cats defeat Wawasee

SYRACUSE — Whitko’s girls soccer team traveled to Wawasee Wednesday and downed the Lady Warriors by a 2-0 score.

Freshman Kaitlin Whitaker knocked in the first goal for the Lady Wildcats, putting Whitko ahead 1-0 going into the second half.

Senior Ellyana Blue, who had six shots on goal, scored the Lady ’Cats’ second goal to give Whitko the 2-0 win.

Wildcats look to win home opener

SOUTH WHITLEY — After starting 2013 0-2, Whitko’s football team found the win column last week by defeating Southwood.

Now, the Wildcats are looking to make it a winning streak against Manchester this week.

With conference play now in full swing, Whitko welcomes Three Rivers Conference-rival Manchester to South Whitley for its home opener.

Through a scheduling quirk, the Wildcats played their first three games of the year on the road.

But Whitko will be home more often than not the rest of the way, as four of the final six contests will be at home.

Col. City to face tough Spartans

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City earned a win in its football conference opener last week against Bellmont.

Now, the Eagles, who are 2-1, have to face the team that has dominated the Northeast Hoosier Conference for the past few seasons when they travel to Homestead.

The 3-0 Spartans have either tied for first or finished first in the conference every year since 2007.

Last week, Columbia City opened its conference schedule with a 41-28 win over Bellmont. Homestead beat East Noble, 17-14 last week.

The Eagles fell to the Spartans in 2012, 41-6.

Eagles look for homecoming win

CHURUBUSCO — It is homecoming week for Smith-Green Community Schools, and the Churubusco football team hopes to keep its perfect record intact Friday.

Eastside will be visiting the Eagles in a game that kicks off at 7 p.m. The Blazers carry a 1-2 record into the contest.

The Eagles have a perfect 3-0 record and are also unbeaten in the NECC. For the season, ’Busco has only allowed six total points in three games.

Last week, the Eagles hit the road and beat Prairie Heights 34-0. Eastside lost last week to Angola, 28-14.

Whitko tennis falls in close match to Rochester, 3-2

ROCHESTER — Whitko’s boys tennis team lost to TRC-rival Rochester Tuesday.

The Zebras won 3-2.

Whitko picked up wins in No. 1 and No. 2 singles.

Tyler Baugher got a victory for the Wildcats at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-2. Blake Castle earned a straight-set win at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 7-5.

Cole Bechtold fell in three sets at No. 3 singles. The No. 1 doubles pair of Alex Robbins and Bailey Platt lost in straight sets, as did the No. 2 doubles team of Alex Bechtold and Reed Brace.

Lady Eagle golf nabs NHC win

FORT WAYNE — Columbia City’s girls golf team scored a win against a conference opponent with the Northeast Hoosier Conference Tournament on tap for later this week.

The Lady Eagles beat Norwell, 199-201 at Orchard Ridge Country Club.

Orchard Ridge is the site of the NHC Tournament this Saturday. With practice time for the tournament limited, both teams decided to play on the course.

With the win, Columbia City ends its conference dual slate with a 2-5 record.

Eagles defeat Bulldogs in singles action

NEW HAVEN — Columbia City’s boys tennis team took two out of three singles matches from New Haven Tuesday.

Niko Rongos of Columbia City moved his 2013 record to 9-0 with a straight-set win.

He beat Corbin Yoh of New Haven, 6-1, 6-2.

In No. 2 singles, Eagle senior Blake Fearnow also grabbed a win. He defeated Drew Guise of New Haven 6-2, 6-2.

Nathan Miller got the lone singles win for the Bulldogs, beating Columbia City’s Dillon Reed 6-2, 6-2.

Lady Wildcats take one at Garrett tourney

GARRETT — Whitko’s volleyball team fell in a match at Garrett Saturday.

The Lady Wildcats swept Hamilton in two sets. Whitko fell in three sets to New Haven and Central Noble and also lost to Eastside.

Whitney Hobbs of Whitko was an all-tournament player for the Lady Wildcats. She had 22 kills, 10 blocks, seven aces and 11 digs.
