’Cats earn conference win; top North Miami

DENVER — A three-headed scoring effort keyed Whitko’s boys basketball team to a Three Rivers Conference victory Friday.

The Wildcats defeated North Miami on the road by a final score of 45-41. It was the second consecutive league win for Whitko.

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s boys basketball team rebounded from a Northeast Hoosier Conference loss to New Haven last week with a win over Norwell Saturday.

The Eagles set the tone for the game from the opening possessions, stealing the ball from Norwell on its first two possessions — before the Knights could get a shot off.

“We set the tone early in the game that we were going to be in control of it,” Columbia City head coach Chris Benedict said.

The Eagles had a 23-10 lead after the first quarter, and a 42-20 advantage at halftime.

Lady Eagle swimmers come in sixth at sectional

WARSAW — Columbia City’s girls swim team ended its season with a sixth-place sectional finish on Saturday.

The Lady Eagles ended the meet with 141 team points. Culver Academy came in first with a team score of 445. Host Warsaw was second with 382.

Columbia City netted a couple of fifth place finishes on the afternoon. Taylor Hartsock came in fifth in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:10.19 and the 200 freestyle relay squad of Katlin Knott, Hartsock, Mishayla Hager and Cassie Bosselman came in fifth at a time of 1:55.39.

County grapplers prep for regional meet

FORT WAYNE — Twenty wrestlers from Whitley County advanced to Saturday’s regional meet at Carroll High School in Fort Wayne and now stand just two weekends away from the state tournament.

Columbia City, Churubusco and Whitko were all at the sectional meet at Carroll last Saturday. Churubusco was second to the hosts in the team race and is sending eight wrestlers to this weekend’s meet. Columbia City and Whitko will each send six to regionals.

Col. City wins final regular-season game

COLUMBIA CITY — Fans at Columbia City’s girls basketball game against Huntington North Thursday wouldn’t have known that the Lady Eagles hadn’t practiced since Monday.

Columbia City head coach Amy Shearer said the team has been battling the flu all week, but the Lady Eagles still managed a 53-49 win in their last regular-season game.

The ill-timed sickness showed in the first quarter, as Huntington jumped out to a 17-8 advantage. The Lady Vikings hit three 3-pointers from three different shooters.

Sectionals begin for Lady Eagle swim team

WARSAW — Sectionals began for the Columbia City girls swimming team Thursday, and the Lady Eagles turned in several performances that qualified for Saturday’s finals.

Thursday was the preliminary event for the finals, which will be Saturday. Winners of Saturday’s sectional races will advance to the state meet on Feb. 9. Qualification for state can also occur for swimmers or relay teams who meet the state standard cutoff time to round out the field to 32 entrants per event.

Whitko girls win on senior night

SOUTH WHITLEY — Senior night was a success for the Whitko girls basketball team.

The Lady Wildcats had not been victors on senior night for a few seasons, but they defeated Lakeland Christian Academy Thursday by a final of 55-32 in the last home appearance for Class of 2013 members Cagney Craig, Melanie Kelsey and Josie Sparks. Whitko closes the regular season with a 7-13 record and Lakeland Christian is 4-16 with one game left on its slate.
