Columbia City girls handed first loss

COLUMBIA CITY — After an 11-0 start to the season, Columbia City’s girls track team split a three-way meet with Norwell and DeKalb Tuesday night.

The Lady Eagles picked up top honors at the Bishop Luers Invitational Saturday, and Head Coach Bob Fahl said the team was still suffering from the effects of the meet.

“I think some of the girls were still feeling the effects of the weather and stress from Luers,” Fahl said.

The Lady Eagles (53) fell to Norwell (61) but topped DeKalb (50).

COLUMBIA CITY — Not many coaches can find positives after an extra-inning loss, but Columbia City Head Girls Softball Coach Steve Cox is an exception.

“I love those games,” Cox said. “I don’t like losing, but I love those games.”

The Lady Eagles dropped a 2-0 game to Leo at Morsches Park.

It was a battle of the defenses, as the game held a 0-0 score through the beginning of the eight inning.

In the top of the eighth, with Leo at bat, one out and a runner on first base, the next batter hit a double to put base runners on second and third.

Defensive play lifts Whitko to win

PERU — A relay play made the difference in a tight baseball game Wednesday night.

Whitko beat Peru, 4-3 on the road.

The Wildcats held the lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Tigers had a runner on first with two outs.

Peru batter Nolan Brimbury hit a double to right field that could have tied the game.

But the Whitko defense came through. The team executed what Coach Erik Hisner called a “perfect” relay, with right fielder Hunter Sroufe getting the ball to shortstop Ethan Nicodemus.

Columbia City tennis tops Huntington

HUNTINGTON — Columbia City’s girls tennis team picked up its second win of the season Wednesday night at Huntington North.

The Lady Eagles won a close 3-2 match against the Lady Vikings to improve to 2-1.

Columbia City’s No. 1 singles player, Celine Rongos, led the Lady Eagles with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Huntington North’s No. 1, Kylie Fredrick.

Lauren Rivas took the win in No. 3 singles, topping Lady Viking Emily Eherenman in a three-set match. Rivas won the first set, 6-2, but fell by a 6-4 score in the second. Rivas came back in the third set to win 6-1.

Whitko netters fall to Rochester, 4-1

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s girls tennis team lost a Three Rivers conference match-up to Rochester Wednesday in just the squad’s second match of a rain-soaked season.

The Lady Zebras beat the Lady Wildcats, 4-1.

Abby Marshall and Laura Alfieri garnered the one Whitko win in doubles, winning by scores of 6-4, 6-3.

In number-one singles, Laura Hippensteel lost to Rochester’s Maddie Lewis, 0-6, 2-6.

’Busco sweeps Fremont

CHURUBUSCO — A dominating performance by Churubusco’s boys’ track team and a solid win by the girls’ squad gave both Eagle teams wins over visiting Northeast Corner Conference foe Fremont. The boys’ team broke the century mark, racking up 119 points to 12 for the visitors, while the girls’ squad posted a 75-55 win on a cold blustery night.

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s girls tennis team made quick work of Whitley County rival Churubusco Monday night.

The host Columbia City team took a definitive 5-0 win.

Celine Rongos set the tone for Columbia City, topping her ’Busco opponent, Cheyenne Conner, by a 6-0, 6-0 score.

In No. 2 singles, Kennedy Slavicek beat Churubusco’s Audrey Gierscher 6-1, 6-0.

The No. 3 singles match was slightly more competitive, as Churubusco’s Madi Cook put up a 6-4, 6-4, fight against the winning Lauren Rivas.

COLUMBIA CITY — Ryan Kerschner hit a grand slam, but it still took extra innings for Columbia City to beat Churubusco Monday.

Columbia City defeated ‘Busco by a final of 6-5 in eight innings.

Kerschner may have had the big blast, but it was Jordan Bickle who had the winning one, doubling in the bottom of the eighth to bring home Travis Herbst and end the game.

The grand slam came in the bottom of the first inning and gave Columbia City a 4-1 lead. Churubusco had scored in the top of the first off of a sacrifice hit by Brent Simmons, which scored Logan Harris.

’Cats golf wins

NORTH MANCHESTER — Whitko’s boys golf team picked up a Three Rivers Conference win Monday night, topping North Miami at Sycamore Golf Club in southwest Whitley County.

The Wildcats won 175-205.

Whitko was led by Will Peters and Daniel Zawlocki, who both scored 43s.
Cole Bechtold finished one stroke behind at a 44, and Colton LeTourneau scored a 45.

Whitko’s Jacob Silveus finished with a 46 and Matt Hathaway was the Wildcats’ No. 6 with a 47.

Nearly all of Whitko’s scores were better than North Miami’s best —­ Corey Shirdiff, who scored a 46.

Wildcats drop close pair to Railroaders

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s baseball saw its five-game winning streak snapped at the hands of Garrett Saturday.

The Wildcats lost a pair of close contests to the Railroaders in a varsity doubleheader. Garrett won game one 6-4 and took game two 1-0.

Leading Whitko at the plate in game one were Alex Stoddard and Ethan Nicodemus, who both had two hits and a run scored.

Stoddard threw a complete-game, two-hitter in the second contest, giving up the lone run of the game unearned and having 13 strikeouts.
