Eagles push past Eastside

CHURUBUSCO — Homecoming on Friday the 13th could have been unlucky for Churubusco’s football team.

Bad luck appeared to have truly struck when Eastside took a 13-0 lead.

But the Eagles turned the number 13 on its head, scoring 31 unanswered points to take a 31-13 win and improving to 4-0 for the season, overall and in the conference.

Eastside (1-3, 0-3 in the NECC) took a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter, using an offense the Eagles did not expect.

Wildcats win home opener

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko newcomer Garrett Elder debuted his varsity Wildcat career in prime fashion in Friday night’s home opener against Three Rivers Conference opponent Manchester.

Elder, a freshman receiver and safety, tacked on two touchdowns in Whitko’s 46-24 win.

Elder transferred from Wawasee High School two weeks ago, and played with the junior varsity squad last week, before seeing varsity minutes Friday.

He caught 2-of-4 passes for 72 yards, and also added some special teams yardage with two kick returns for 22 yards.

Defensively, he had two tackles.

Churubusco netters earn win at Fremont

FREMONT — Churubusco’s volleyball team picked up a road win in the Northeast Corner Conference Thursday.

’Busco swept Fremont by scores of 25-23, 25-16 and 25-7.

Alisha Farner led Churubusco in kills with 10 and aces with four. Danielle Pippenger paced the team in blocks with two and digs with 13. Setter Lacey Pulley was the assist leader with 19.

Churubusco next plays Tuesday at Prairie Heights.

Manchester beats Whitko

NORTH MANCHESTER — Manchester’s boys tennis team swept Whitko Thursday.

Whitko outlasts Squires

NORTH MANCHESTER — On Aug. 29, the Manchester Lady Squires visited Whitko for a volleyball match. The Lady ‘Cats defeated their opponent in three games.

Their first meeting was not considered a conference match. However, on Thursday evening the two teams battled at Manchester for Three Rivers Conference bragging rights.

The outcome was like their first meeting — with Whitko prevailing — but this time needing five games in order to leave Wabash County with the winning edge. Whitko outlasted the Squires 15-25, 25-17, 25-22, 18-25, 15-10.

Lady Eagles fall to Luers

COLUMBIA CITY — Visiting Fort Wayne Bishop Luers earned a victory over Columbia City’s girls soccer team Thursday.

The Lady Knights beat the Lady Eagles 7-0 Thursday.

Luers got four goals in the first half and three in the second half on its way to the victory.

Columbia City’s record falls to 2-7 for the year. The Lady Eagles will play at New Haven Monday at 5 p.m.

Luers has a record of 6-3 overall.

Leo edges Col.City linksters by two strokes

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s girls golf team lost a narrow home contest to Leo Thursday.

In their last match-up before the NHC meet, the Lady Eagles shot an even 200 on their home course.

Visiting Leo had 191 to earn the victory.

Cheyenne Johnson led the way for Columbia City with a score of 46, which tied Leo’s Anna Feldman for the top score of the meet.

Taylor Daniel had 49, and Macenzie Lane had 52. Courtney Bacon and Allison Yoder had 53 and 62, respectively, for the remainder of Columbia City’s scores.

For the year, the Lady Eagles now hold a 4-9 record. Leo is 12-3.

’Busco tennis falls to Northrop

CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco’s boys tennis team dropped a home contest to Fort Wayne Northrop Wednesday.

The visiting Bruins beat the Eagles 4-0.

In No. 1 singles, ’Busco junior Luke Lillmars lost to Northrop’s Alex Stavretis in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.

At No. 2 singles, Eagle junior Landon Lillmars dropped a straight-set match to Mike Ankenbruck, 6-2, 6-1.

In No. 3 singles, Churubusco’s Cody Luttman fell in a straight-set match to Gavin Neyman by a final of 6-2, 7-5.

Lady ’Cats defeat Wawasee

SYRACUSE — Whitko’s girls soccer team traveled to Wawasee Wednesday and downed the Lady Warriors by a 2-0 score.

Freshman Kaitlin Whitaker knocked in the first goal for the Lady Wildcats, putting Whitko ahead 1-0 going into the second half.

Senior Ellyana Blue, who had six shots on goal, scored the Lady ’Cats’ second goal to give Whitko the 2-0 win.

Wildcats look to win home opener

SOUTH WHITLEY — After starting 2013 0-2, Whitko’s football team found the win column last week by defeating Southwood.

Now, the Wildcats are looking to make it a winning streak against Manchester this week.

With conference play now in full swing, Whitko welcomes Three Rivers Conference-rival Manchester to South Whitley for its home opener.

Through a scheduling quirk, the Wildcats played their first three games of the year on the road.

But Whitko will be home more often than not the rest of the way, as four of the final six contests will be at home.

Col. City to face tough Spartans

September 12, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City earned a win in its football conference opener last week against Bellmont.

Now, the Eagles, who are 2-1, have to face the team that has dominated the Northeast Hoosier Conference for the past few seasons when they travel to Homestead.

The 3-0 Spartans have either tied for first or finished first in the conference every year since 2007.

Last week, Columbia City opened its conference schedule with a 41-28 win over Bellmont. Homestead beat East Noble, 17-14 last week.

The Eagles fell to the Spartans in 2012, 41-6.
