Whitley Co. Rapids win Spooktacular Invite

KENDALLVILLE — Whitley County Rapids took home first place among eight teams at the Spooktacular Invitational held at the Cole YMCA in Kendallville.

There were eight teams that competed in the swim meet.

Several Rapids team records were broken. Hadley Snell swam 18.75 in the 25 butterfly to break the girls 8-and-under record.

Mykaela Crowell set three new team records for girls 11-12. Those times and events included: a 32.49 in the 50 backstroke, a 35.50 in the 50 breaststroke and a 1:12.16 in the 100 individual medley.

Sectional finals this week for most schools

NORTHEAST INDIANA — With two weeks of postseason football in the books, certain trends have emerged.

Some high school football conferences have several schools still in play for the ultimate goal.

Others have had many of their teams fall out of the race.

Northeast Hoosier Conference

With two weeks gone, four Northeast Hoosier Conference (NHC) schools remain.

Carroll defeated Warsaw for a Class 6A sectional title. Now, the Chargers will take on Carmel this week for a regional championship.

CCHS grads off to strong start at H.U.

HUNTINGTON — Huntington University’s men’s basketball team is off to a perfect start in the early going of the 2013-14 Forester hoops season.

The Foresters beat visiting Purdue North Central Tuesday 90-78.

Columbia City High School 2013 graduate Derek Hinen is a starter as a freshman for Huntington, and he was the third-leading scorer in Tuesday’s win.

Hinen had 13 points and paced the Foresters with eight assists.

Shane Merryman led Huntington in scoring with 24 and rebounds with nine.

Drew Benedict, another CCHS 2013 graduate, had seven points for the Foresters Tuesday.

Harney to continue career at Ind. Tech

COLUMBIA CITY — A Columbia City athlete saw his cross country season end early, and now has seen the next step in his career begin early.

Evan Harney, a senior, was injured midway through the 2013 season for the Eagles.

However, in late October he signed with Indiana Tech to continue his running career.

The move comes early in the recruiting process.

Harney will run cross country and distance events in track for the Warriors.

Roush ends career at state meet

TERRE HAUTE — Columbia City senior Samantha Roush ended her cross country career with a 44th-place finish at the state meet at Lavern Gibson Championship Course Saturday.

Roush clocked a time of 19:10.8, which was a pace of 6:10 per mile.
Kelcy Welch of Carmel came in first with a time of 17:53.9.

For Roush, it was the fourth time in her career at the state meet, as she made it all four years in high school.

Her best finish was when she came in seventh two years ago as a sophomore.

Columbia City Head Cross Country Coach Bob Fahl said Roush had a solid race Saturday.

The Eagle has landed

BREMEN — A sports team often measures its quality by its competition.
For Churubusco’s football team, the stick measures highly despite a Friday night sectional semifinal loss to Bremen.

The ninth-ranked Eagles lost to the 14th-ranked Lions 35-28. Churubusco Head Football Coach Paul Sade said his team has a great deal to take away from the contest.

“It’s probably the best team we’ve played, one of the best programs we have played,.” he said.

Whitko middle schoolers finish football season

LARWILL— Whitko’s middle school football teams have finished their respective 2013 seasons.

The seventh grade team scored a win Oct. 16 against Crestview by a 28-16 score.

Spencer Sroufe scored two touchdowns and had an extra point, Collin Loe scored one touchdown and Jack Curless had one.

The eighth grade Wildcats also won Oct. 16 against Crestview 12-0. Touchdowns were scored by Hunter Reed and Chaz Stanley.

The seventh grade team ended the year at 2-7 and the eighth grade squad finished 4-5.

Green wins junior golf tournament

LEBANON, Ohio — A Columbia City High School sophomore captured a Golf Week Junior Tour (GJT) win last weekend.

Tyler Green won the tour event at Shaker Run in Lebanon, Ohio.

It took a playoff for Green to do it, as he and Spencer Dobbs both shot 152 over the two days to tie in the boys’ 15-19 division.

On the second playoff hole, though, Green nearly had a hole-in-one. His tee shot landed just three feet from the cup. He finished and won the tournament on that hole.

Roush to cap off harrier career at state meet

TERRE HAUTE — A Columbia City cross country runner will step onto the course one more time Saturday.

Lady Eagle senior Samantha Roush qualified for the state meet, which will be this Saturday in Terre Haute.

She clinched the spot by placing seventh at the New Haven semi-state meet last Saturday.

This is the fourth consecutive year Roush has qualified. Her freshman year she was 16th, she came in seventh as a sophomore and was 24th last year.

The girls race will be at 1:45 p.m. at LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute. The boys race is at 1 p.m.

Ninth-ranked Eagles to take on Lions

CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco’s football team will likely have a more difficult path to a victory in this week’s sectional semifinal.

One week after scoring a 28-13 home win against Eastside, the Eagles have to hit the road to play Class 2A 14th-ranked Bremen.

The Lions defeated Manchester 49-21 in their sectional quarterfinal game last week.

Churubusco ended the 2013 regular season ranked ninth.

For both teams, it will be a unique showdown. ’Busco enters 8-2, and Bremen 7-3, but both schools are undefeated against Class 2A competition.
