'BUSCO INVITATIONAL: Host boys win their own track invite

CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco’s boys’ track team almost doubled the nearest competitor’s score in taking their own ‘Busco Invitational title Saturday.

The Eagles scored 180.5 points, and won seven of 16 events. Jimtown was a distant second with 97.5 points.NECC foe Eastside was third with 86. Woodlan (80), Wabash (77), Manchester (66), Culver (16), Triton (15) and Fremont (4) rounded out the rest of the field.

TEN-RUN RULE: Lady Eagles win in five innings

COLUMBIA CITY — Saturday, for the second time in as many games, the Columbia City’s Lady Eagle softball team dispatched a rival by the ten-run rule. After downing Whitko 15-2 on Friday, Columbia City beat the Warsaw Lady Tigers 11-1 in five innings in a game at the Morsches Park diamond.

Eagle pitcher Anna Weigold gave up a one-out single, but the Eagle catcher, Bella Krieg, erased that threat by cutting down the Tiger baserunner on her attempt to steal second. A ground-out to shortstop set the Tigers down in the first.

Columbia City wins extra-inning battle

WARSAW — Spectators got their money’s worth Friday night as the Columbia City baseball team defeated Warsaw on its home field in extra innings, 8-4.

After a scoreless first inning for both teams, Warsaw hit well in the second and sent two runners in for scores.

The Eagles struggled to get anything going offensively through four innings before coming to life in the top of the fifth.

On just three hits, Columbia City drove in three runs to take the lead.

BLANKED: ’Busco tennis downed by Fremont

CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco’s Lady Eagle tennis team suffered a 5-0 loss to visiting Fremont on a Thursday match played on the Churubusco park courts.

At No. 1 singles, Camille Cseri fell to Fremont’s Kaileigh Folland in straight sets, 3-6, 5-7.

TRACK: Whitko girls beat Rochester

ROCHESTER — Whitko’s girls track team took a lopsided win at Rochester Thursday, 82-50.

The Lady Wildcats were led by several first-place finishes.

Elaine Warner had a stellar performance for Whitko, placing first in two events, second in another and helping a relay team to a win.

STAYING PERFECT: Eagles top Norwell, 155-174; set for Homestead

OSSIAN — Columbia City’s boys golf team traveled to Timber Ridge Golf Course Thursday to take on Norwell.

The Eagles came away with an impressive score and the win, 155-174, to remain undefeated on the season.

“This was a strong win on the road to open conference play,” said Columbia City Head Coach Andrew Thompson. “I thought our guys handled the wet conditions well.”

DERAILED: ’Busco tops Garrett, 14-2

CHURUBUSCO — Sending 13 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first inning, Churubusco’s baseball team put on an offensive display against the visiting Garrett Railroaders Thursday evening, taking a 14-2 win in five innings.

The host Eagles pounded out 12 hits for the contest in just four at-bats. The outcome could have been worse as the Eagles left six runners on base.

SEASON OPENER: Lady Eagles start season with win

OSSIAN — Columbia City’s girls’ tennis team opened the season with a 4-1 win at Northeast Hoosier Conference foe Norwell Tuesday evening.

Rachel Flauding, dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Norwell’s Molly Burton in the No. 1 singles match.

Katie Doerhmann downed Norwell’s Megan Herber by identical 6-1, 6-1 scores in the No. 2 singles slot, while Hannah Clark defeated Norwell’s Cierra Middleton 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.

SOFTBALL: Whitko remains undefeated

SOUTH WHITLEY — After five innings, Whitko’s Lady Wildcats held a 4-1 lead over West Noble’s Lady Chargers.

But in the sixth inning, the Whitko bats started connecting and the flood gates opened on the way to an 11-1 win for the Lady ’Cats to end the game early. Back-to-back singles by Hanna Yohe and Emily Hughes scored Syndney Lancaster and Riley Insley, respectively.

EAGLES DOWN: ’Busco falls to Manchester 12-3

CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco’s Lady Eagle softball team is still in search of its first win of the season following a 12-3 home loss to an aggressive Manchester team Wednesday.

The Eagles jumped in front in the bottom of the first inning when Jazlyn Needler scored on a single by Alisha Farner. Needler had reached safely on a Manchester error.
