TRACK: Whitko girls beat Rochester

ROCHESTER — Whitko’s girls track team took a lopsided win at Rochester Thursday, 82-50.

The Lady Wildcats were led by several first-place finishes.

Elaine Warner had a stellar performance for Whitko, placing first in two events, second in another and helping a relay team to a win.

STAYING PERFECT: Eagles top Norwell, 155-174; set for Homestead

OSSIAN — Columbia City’s boys golf team traveled to Timber Ridge Golf Course Thursday to take on Norwell.

The Eagles came away with an impressive score and the win, 155-174, to remain undefeated on the season.

“This was a strong win on the road to open conference play,” said Columbia City Head Coach Andrew Thompson. “I thought our guys handled the wet conditions well.”

DERAILED: ’Busco tops Garrett, 14-2

CHURUBUSCO — Sending 13 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first inning, Churubusco’s baseball team put on an offensive display against the visiting Garrett Railroaders Thursday evening, taking a 14-2 win in five innings.

The host Eagles pounded out 12 hits for the contest in just four at-bats. The outcome could have been worse as the Eagles left six runners on base.

SEASON OPENER: Lady Eagles start season with win

OSSIAN — Columbia City’s girls’ tennis team opened the season with a 4-1 win at Northeast Hoosier Conference foe Norwell Tuesday evening.

Rachel Flauding, dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Norwell’s Molly Burton in the No. 1 singles match.

Katie Doerhmann downed Norwell’s Megan Herber by identical 6-1, 6-1 scores in the No. 2 singles slot, while Hannah Clark defeated Norwell’s Cierra Middleton 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.

SOFTBALL: Whitko remains undefeated

SOUTH WHITLEY — After five innings, Whitko’s Lady Wildcats held a 4-1 lead over West Noble’s Lady Chargers.

But in the sixth inning, the Whitko bats started connecting and the flood gates opened on the way to an 11-1 win for the Lady ’Cats to end the game early. Back-to-back singles by Hanna Yohe and Emily Hughes scored Syndney Lancaster and Riley Insley, respectively.

EAGLES DOWN: ’Busco falls to Manchester 12-3

CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco’s Lady Eagle softball team is still in search of its first win of the season following a 12-3 home loss to an aggressive Manchester team Wednesday.

The Eagles jumped in front in the bottom of the first inning when Jazlyn Needler scored on a single by Alisha Farner. Needler had reached safely on a Manchester error.

20 TO ZIP: Lady ’Cats pound South Side

FORT WAYNE — In a game that was essentially over after two innings, the Whitko Lady Wildcats traveled to Fort Wayne South Side Tuesday evening, pummeling the Lady Archers 20-0.

While holding the Lady Archers scoreless, Whitko put up six runs in the first inning and eight in the second to take a 14-0 lead after two innings.

COLUMBIA CITY — Winning games in dramatic fashion is becoming a habit for the Columbia City Lady Eagle softball team.

After winning the season opener against Marion in its final at-bat, Columbia City used two home runs in the bottom of the seventh — including a two-run walk-off shot — to down Wawasee 6-4 Tuesday night at Morsches Park.

The Lady Eagles faced a very good fielding Wawasee Lady Warrior team lead by pitcher Meghan Fretz. Fretz picked up 10 strike-outs in the game, including the first four Lady Eagles that she faced.

EAGLES DOWN: Carroll wins against Churubusco, 10-7

CHURUBUSCO — Despite eight errors by the Carroll Charger defense, Churubusco’s varsity baseball team gave up its early lead and lost at home in extra innings Monday night, 10-7.

The first score of the game came from the Eagles off an RBI single by Drew Buffenbarger that sent Brandon Jencks home.

’Busco scored once more in the second and once in the third before a three-inning drought.

TWICE IS NICE: Wildcats win DH over Argos

ARGOS — The Whitko Wildcat baseball team traveled to Argos Saturday and took a pair of lopsided wins against the Dragons. The Wildcats took game one 16-6 in six innings, and game two 15-1 in five innings.
In game one the Wildcats put runs on the board in every inning, taking an 8-1 lead after the fourth inning.

The Wildcats tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth, and withstood a Dragon rally that saw the hosts push across five runs in the bottom of the fifth to close to within four at 10-6.
