Benedict signs with Huntington

HUNTINGTON — Columbia City basketball stand-out Drew Benedict signed with Huntington University last week, as the Forresters’ first recruit for the 2013 season.

Benedict, a 5-foot-10 senior shooting guard for the Eagles, is one of the area’s top shooters, holding Columbia City High School’s record for most 3-pointers made for a season and career, and is on pace to score more than 1,000 points by the end of this season — making him one of the top five in Columbia City’s history.

Running to state: Injury doesn’t stop Roush en route to Terre Haute

FORT WAYNE — Columbia City cross country stand-out Samantha Roush isn’t unfamiliar to injuries this season.

After a preseason injury that knocked her out of practice for nearly six weeks, Roush has been rebuilding her stamina — and confidence — all season.

Just seven days before her third appearance at the New Haven semi-state meet, Roush was in a four-wheeler accident, injuring her tailbone and taking her away from practice most of the week.

“It’s been a very stressful and frustrating season with injuries,” Roush said. “I was very tired today.”

Whitko, Columbia City, ’Busco advance to second round of sectionals

All three Whitley County football teams won the opening round of sectionals Friday.
Columbia City topped IHSAA Class 4A No. 8 Leo by a 14-7 score.
Whitko won a close game to Garrett 21-16 and Churubusco topped Oak Hill 38-14.

City volleyball season ends

FORT WAYNE — The Columbia City Lady Eagle volleyball team’s season came to an end Wednesday night at the hands of the Fort Wayne Snider Lady Panthers in the opening round of IHSAA Sectional play.

The Eagles fell by a 25-12, 25-21, 25-22 score in a match that turned very competitive after the first game.

Roush advances to semi-state

LIGONIER — Local cross country runners competed in the West Noble Regional Saturday in Ligonier.

While 15 Whitley County harriers entered the regional, only one is advancing to next week’s semi-state meet at New Haven — Columbia City junior Samantha Roush.

Roush placed third in the girls race with a season-best time, 18:52.81.

Roush suffered a preseason injury, and Columbia City Head Coach Bob Fahl said she’s been improving with every meet.

“She was very strong, very focused, very controlled ... very good,” Fahl said.

FOUR-PEAT: ’Busco seniors win fourth NECC title

CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco’s football seniors ended their final regular-season game with more than a Northeast Corner Conference title Friday night.

The Eagles topped (formerly) undefeated Lakeland 38-16 to win their fourth and final conference championship of their careers.

Despite taking on the only team withouth a loss in the NECC, Churubusco’s seniors modeled their familiarity as the conference’s top dogs, holding the lead for nearly the entire game.

“We knew it was going to be a big game and we were excited for the challenge,” Churubusco stand-out senior Jason Nicodemus said.

City closes out NHC with 26-6 win

OSSIAN — Friday night the Columbia City Eagle football squad wrapped up its regular season with a trip to Northeast Hoosier Conference opponent Norwell.

A review of the game reads like the mixed coverage of a movie blockbuster ... “A bang-up start, with a satisfying ending, but a little slow in the middle,” as the Eagles used big plays early and late to post a 26-6 win over the host Knights.

The Eagles started the game with a bang, executing a pop-up onside kick by Jose Perez that was recovered by Columbia City’s Wayne Smith on the Norwell 38-yard line.

Tippecanoe Valley tops Wildcats, 55-14

AKRON — Whitko closed out the regular season with a loss to the top team in the Three Rivers Conference, Tippecanoe Valley, Friday in Akron.

The Vikings won a decisive 55-14 over the Wildcats, who are now preparing for the opening round of sectionals next week, as Whitko hosts the Garrett Railroaders.

Tippy Valley came out to a 21-7 lead in the first quarter. Whitko’s touchdown came with 3:17 to go in the quarter with a 2-yard run by Tanner Hughes. Hughes led Whitko in rushing with 51 yards on 14 carries.

’Busco wins opening round of NECC tourney

CHURUBUSCO — For the second time in just nine days the Churubusco Lady Eagle volleyball team played host to the Lakeland Lady Lakers, this time in an opening-round game in the Northeast Corner Conference Tournament.

As Yogi Berra once said, “It was déjà` vu all over again,” as the host Lady Eagles repeated their earlier performance taking a relatively easy 25-13, 25-6, 25-14 straight set win over the Lady Lakers to advance to Saturday’s pool play.

“It’s the post-season now, the regular season is over ,” said Goings. “And we are 1-0 in the post season.”

Area football teams play the last game of the regular season this Friday. Churubusco is hosting Lakeland for the Northeast Corner Conference title game. Columbia City travels to 0-8 Norwell and Whitko faces Tippecanoe Valley in Akron.
