Graduation leaves a big gap for Whitko

March 14, 2013

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s boys track team comes off a successful campaign last year looking to continue a string of Three Rivers Conference championships that stretches back to 2008.

The Wildcats will need to replace a backbone of seniors from last year’s team that finished with a 9-1 record.

Injuries, inexperience befall ’Busco

March 13, 2013

CHURUBUSCO — Having two of three senior players miss time due to injuries would make for a rough season for just about any team.

That’s what happened to Churubusco’s girls basketball team during its 2012-13 season, as the Lady Eagles finished the year 3-18.

Savannah Labenz had returned for her senior season to start at point guard for the Lady Eagles. Unfortunately, her high school finale was cut short by a torn labrum suffered shortly before Christmas that caused her to miss the remainder of the season.

Whitko boys end 2013 season on a surge

March 12, 2013

SOUTH WHITLEY — The end is better than the beginning.

That statement was certainly true for Whitko’s boys basketball team in the 2012-13 season. The Wildcats, under first-year head coach Scott Wessel, finished with a record of 6-16. However, Whitko ended its season playing its best basketball of the year and was able to avenge an early-season defeat in the sectional tournament.

“We ended the year the way you want to be playing,” Wessel said.
Whitko was 4-4 in the final weeks of the season, claiming close wins over conference foes in the process.

Heart-breaking head-scratcher

March 8, 2013

HUNTERTOWN — Puzzled. Frustrated. Confused. Melancholy. Dumbfounded.

That’s how many fans felt in the final seconds of Columbia City’s last game of the season against DeKalb.

A week after the blow, many Eagle followers are still scratching their heads — what happened?

The Eagles suffered a difficult, one-point loss to the Barons in the sectional semifinal last Friday after an extremely rare call by the referees in the last 2.5 seconds — a “blarge.”

A blarge is a slang term used by officials, when a block and charge are called at the same time.

Baseball registration extended

March 6, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — Registration for youth baseball in Columbia City has been extended.

Previously, the deadline was this past Saturday without having to pay a late fee. Now, according to Columbia City Park Director Mark Green, interested individuals have until this Friday at the end of business hours to register for the 2013 baseball season.

“Our office hours go until 4:30 p.m. Friday,” he said. “Our baseball committee wanted to extend it another week, so we did.”

Softball’s deadline remains the same, March 16.

Painful payback: DeKalb ends Eagles’ triumphant season with 1-point defeat in sectional semifinal

March 2, 2013

HUNTERTOWN — All good things must come to an end.

Unfortunately for Columbia City’s boys basketball team, the end was Friday night at Carroll.

The Eagles took on DeKalb in the semifinal game, a squad Columbia City beat by one point in the regular season.

The Barons earned revenge in the state tournament, topping the Eagles 46-45 and ending head coach Chris Benedict’s season with a group of seniors he’s coached since they were tykes.
