Lady Wildcats lose close game to Rochester, 53-51

ROCHESTER — Whitko girls basketball team played a hard-fought game in Rochester Saturday night that came down to the final seconds to decide. It was a battle of two evenly matched teams, as neither squad led by more than seven points at any point in the game.

From opening tip off to the final buzzer, the Lady Wildcats had to contend with a ferocious defensive effort by Rochester, falling 53-51 to their Three Rivers Conference foes. The staunch defense disrupted Whitko’s timing and caused numerous turnovers — particularly in the first half.

Lady Eagles win second in a row

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s girls basketball team picked up its second win in a row and first Northeast Hoosier Conference game of the season Saturday night.

The Lady Eagles hosted and defeated Bellmont’s Lady Squaws to get their fourth win of the season.Columbia City’s staunch defense held the Lady Squaws to one field goal in the first quarter en route to a 45-34 win.

Guards Macie Hinen and Aubrey Wright combined for seven steals and six assists. Emily Whiteleather and Hinen led the boards with seven rebounds apiece.

FORT WAYNE — For Columbia City’s fifth game in five days, head basketball coach Chris Benedict is pleased.

“Sometimes it might not be the prettiest, but our guys make the plays to win the basketball game,” Benedict said. “They do a really good job of finding a way to get the job done.”

Columbia City topped Northridge 59-48 at the Memorial Coliseum Tuesday night in the Super Hoops Classic.

The Eagles were far from their 90 percent 3-point shooting display against Whitko in the season-opener. In fact, Columbia City shot 17 percent from behind the arc, one of the worst of the season.

Munster hands Eagles first loss

COLUMBIA CITY — Less than a week after receiving their first votes in the Associated Press poll, Columbia City’s boys basketball team lost its first game of the season Friday.

Their opponent was no slouch. The Munster Mustangs are 8-0 and ranked No. 5 in the state by the AP. Columbia City played a tight first half with the Mustangs before falling 66-54.

The Eagles took 4-0 and 7-2 leads early in the first quarter with buckets by Daniel Woll and Derek Hinen, holding Munster to two field goals in the first four minutes.

C.C. girls drop two games

Columbia City’s girls basketball team competed in the first day of the Northridge Holiday Tournament Thursday.

The Lady Eagles dropped both games, falling to 59-54 to Andrean in the opening game and 58-44 to Portage in the afternoon session.

Tourney starts Friday

Basketball tournaments begin tomorrow, as Columbia City and Churubusco’s boys are slated to play two games at CCHS Friday, before finishing the tournament at Carroll High School Saturday.

State runners up

Churubusco’s wrestling team competed in the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association’s team wrestling state finals on Saturday.

The Eagles made it to the final round, falling to Adams Central by a 46-23 score. Individual results were not available at press time.

Churubusco's wrestling team is competing in the Indiana State Wrestling Coaches Association's Team State Finals on Saturday. The event was formed because the IHSAA got rid of the team finals tournament this season.
