School comes first for Lady Eagle volleyball

August 23, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — While winning games are always the goal, Columbia City’s girls volleyball team has another priority — the classroom.

Every junior and senior on the Lady Eagles’ squad is a member of the CCHS National Honor Society. Last season, the girls volleyball squad had one of the top grade-point averages in the school.

“They’re very well-rounded girls,” Columbia City Head Coach Trish Hinen said.

Even during the busy fall season with late nights and practices, Hinen said the girls’ grades hardly waiver.

“We do grade checks every Friday,” Hinen said.

Lady ’Cats drop season opener, 7-3

SOUTH WHITLEY — The result from the opening night performance was not what Head Coach Gary Sims had in mind.

At home to kick off their 2013 soccer campaign, the Whitko Lady Wildcats fell behind early and never recovered as the Cougars from Central Noble came away with a 7-3 win.

Following the contest, Sims was having a difficult time putting into words his disappointment.

“We are way better than this,” Sims said. “Tonight, we ran a lot, but we didn’t play soccer.”

’Busco rallies to hold off Garrett

August 23, 2013

CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco’s volleyball team rallied in game four to down visiting Garrett for its first win of the season Thursday.

The Lady Eagles (1-1), took the lead, 2-0. Victory was in sight in game three, with ‘Busco holding a 24-21 advantage.

Garrett then came back, running off five consecutive points to steal game 3, 26-24.

Not wanting the same trend to repeat in game four, Churubusco served aggressively, taking an 8-1 edge and not relinquishing the lead for the remainder of the match.

Col. City soccer tops Whitko, 2-0

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s boys soccer team held its perfect record after topping county-rival Whitko Thursday night, 2-0.

In a slow start to the Eagles’ home opener, Columbia City picked up its first goal with less than two minutes left of the 40-minute first half.

Offensive stand-out Drake Dewitt knocked the ball past Whitko goalkeeper Jacob Helton to take a 1-0 lead.

Dewitt had a hat-trick performance in the Eagles’ season opener at Central Noble Tuesday, when Columbia City won 3-2.

Seth Kissinger: Gridder gone runner

August 22, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City senior Seth Kissinger is stepping off the football field and putting on his running shoes this fall.

After playing most of his high school career with the pigskin, he made a tough decision to leave the squad and join cross country this fall.

“It was a hard decision,” Kissinger said. “I had to ask myself what the better option was for my future.”

Kissinger took on the 800-meter run last spring in track and wanted to make running a more year-round practice to increase his chances of a scholarship.

PURDUE BOUND: Col. City’s Bickle to play in Big Ten

August 22, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City High School 2013 graduate Jordan Bickle is headed to the Big Ten to play NCAA Division I baseball.

Bickle recently signed with Purdue University to play baseball in the 2014 season.

“I’m definitely on the team,” said Bickle when asked about his status on the Boilermakers spring roster.

Bickle’s path to playing collegiate baseball for the Boilermakers wasn’t a straight one. In fact, his mind was not made up until after graduation day at CCHS.

Despite loss, Col. City on upswing

August 21, 2013

DECATUR — Though Columbia City’s girls golf team suffered another loss Tuesday night, the Lady Eagles posted their best score in three years.

Bellmont, which is undefeated, hosted and dropped Columbia City by a 173-179 score at Cross Creek Golf Course.

Though the team went home without a win, Columbia City Head Coach Jim Thompson was very pleased with the Lady Eagles’ score.

“That’s as good as I’ve ever felt with a loss,” Thompson said. “Bellmont is a good team and we were playing on their course. All of our girls played well. We were in it until the end.”

Comeback leads Whitko to win

August 21, 2013

SOUTH WHITLEY— A big fourth-game comeback helped Whitko’s volleyball team start 2013 with a win Tuesday.

Whitko downed visiting Lakeland Christian Academy 3-2 — 25-22, 19-25, 17-25, 25-13, 15-11.

By the middle of game three, the Lady Wildcats might have wondered if they would take the match the distance, let alone win. Lakeland took advantage of poor Whitko passing to win game two, then never trailed in taking the third game.

“We struggled getting our passes to the net,” said Whitko Head Volleyball Coach Brandy Smith.

Lady Eagles open with road win

August 21, 2013

FORT WAYNE — Columbia City’s girls volleyball team opened its season on the road at Fort Wayne North Side and Head Coach Trish Hinen was hoping to start the season with a three-game sweep.

Unfortunately for the Lady Eagles, a slow start in the opening game cost them the sweep Hinen was hoping for, but solid and consistent play throughout the night allowed Columbia City to leave Allen County with a win.

After dropping the initial contest 25-15, the Eagles turned the match around, winning the next three 27-25, 25-17 and 25-16.
