Whitko’s Craig receives all-state recognition

March 20, 2013

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko senior Cagney Craig closed her career with a string of honors — and the biggest one was announced recently.

Craig was named honorable mention to the Indiana All-State Senior Basketball Team as selected by the IBCA.

“Next to making the Indiana All-Star team, this might be the highest acknowledgement for a basketball player in Indiana,” said Whitko girls basketball coach Brandon Bradley.

Craig was also named first team for the Three Rivers Conference this season.

City softball looks to win NHC again

March 20, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — High school softball is a game dominated by pitching and solid defense behind the plate.

When a team loses its ace All-Northeast Hoosier Conference pitcher and its All-NHC catcher, normally the other teams in the conference would be licking their chops in anticipation of this year’s season.

But that may not be the case this year, as the Columbia City squad still returns a senior-laden team full of experience.

Last year, the Lady Eagles posted a 19-9 overall record including a 7-0 sweep of the Northeast Hoosier Conference.

’Busco hopes for change this year

March 19, 2013

CHURUBUSCO — Last year’s season may not have turned out the way that Churubusco’s baseball team was hoping for, but this season’s team returns a strong nucleus from that squad and looks to improve on last year’s 7-24 record.

The Eagles graduated pitcher Austin Geoprich, who was 3-3 on the season and batted .278.

Also gone from the Churubusco lineup are infielder Alan Meeks, a .374 hitter who also had 13 stolen bases, and Adam Boggess, who batted at a .278 clip with 21 RBI from his left field position.

Senior-less ‘Busco comes on late

March 18, 2013

CHURUBUSCO — Fourteen, 1,057 and 24. What do these numbers mean?

Fourteen is the number of losses Churubusco’s boys basketball team suffered before winning its first game, an agonizing stretch for the Eagles and their fans.

The number 1,057 is the amount of points the 2011-12 Eagles scored. That team went 14-7.

Tracksters compete at state

March 18, 2013

MARION — Several local tracksters competed in Saturday’s Indiana State Indoor Track finals at Indiana Wesleyan.

Leading the area’s athletes were Austin McClure and Connor Stouder.

McClure, of Churubusco, took first in the shotput in the small school division. His teammate, Eric Kuznar, placed 16th in the same event.

Stouder, of Whitko, was state runner up in the 55-meter dash.

Churubusco’s Cory Miller came in eighth in the pole vault, and Whitko’s 1,600-meter relay team placed ninth.

’Busco’s Connor Hogeston finished 10th in the 3,200-meter run.

’Cats expect to compete with the best

March 15, 2013

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s baseball team returns a solid core of players and will be taking on some of the best competition in the state.

The Wildcats are in the same Class 3A sectional as Bellmont, which went to the semistate game a year ago. In the Three Rivers Conference, Northfield was the Class 2A state champion from last year.

“We’re not the favorite on paper,” said Whitko coach Erik Hisner. “But we like what we see and are setting some goals going forward.”

Saturday last day for softball sign-up

COLUMBIA CITY — Saturday will be the final day residents can register for the summer softball season.

There will be a special registration period at the pavilion in Morsches Park Saturday. People can come between 9 and 11 a.m. and 1 and 3 p.m. to sign-up.

Softball evaluations will be on Saturday, March 23 at noon for the 9 to 11 age group and at 2:30 p.m. for the 12 to 14 group. Those who wish to play up from their age group will have their time at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 23.

Opening day is set for April 27. So far, registration numbers have been solid.

Graduation leaves a big gap for Whitko

March 14, 2013

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s boys track team comes off a successful campaign last year looking to continue a string of Three Rivers Conference championships that stretches back to 2008.

The Wildcats will need to replace a backbone of seniors from last year’s team that finished with a 9-1 record.

Injuries, inexperience befall ’Busco

March 13, 2013

CHURUBUSCO — Having two of three senior players miss time due to injuries would make for a rough season for just about any team.

That’s what happened to Churubusco’s girls basketball team during its 2012-13 season, as the Lady Eagles finished the year 3-18.

Savannah Labenz had returned for her senior season to start at point guard for the Lady Eagles. Unfortunately, her high school finale was cut short by a torn labrum suffered shortly before Christmas that caused her to miss the remainder of the season.

Whitko boys end 2013 season on a surge

March 12, 2013

SOUTH WHITLEY — The end is better than the beginning.

That statement was certainly true for Whitko’s boys basketball team in the 2012-13 season. The Wildcats, under first-year head coach Scott Wessel, finished with a record of 6-16. However, Whitko ended its season playing its best basketball of the year and was able to avenge an early-season defeat in the sectional tournament.

“We ended the year the way you want to be playing,” Wessel said.
Whitko was 4-4 in the final weeks of the season, claiming close wins over conference foes in the process.
