BIG FISH, BIG PROBLEM: Neely on mission to preserve local lakes

Columbia City resident Adam Neely is on a mission to preserve local lakes. Neely has been bowhunting 45-pound fish, such as the ones pictured, which are threatening the habitats of area waters. These non-game fish include Dogfish, Common Carp, Gar, Asian Carp, Buffalo and Grass Carp. These particular fish are breeding so quickly that they are threatening other fish species in Northeast Indiana Lakes.

CHEERING CHILDREN: Learning the basics

Columbia City High School is hosting a camp for aspiring cheerleaders. The camp is led by the high school’s cheer squad in the Donald S. Weeks gymnasium.

High school fall sports previews, including games schedules, will be inserted into the Aug. 21 edition of The Post & Mail.

TAYLOR MAKES MOVE: Hired as volleyball coach and teacher

CHURUBUSCO ­— Churubusco High School will have a new head volleyball coach this season with the addition of Suzanne Taylor. Taylor is a recent graduate of Indiana Tech where she majored in elementary education and played volleyball for the school for four years, as well as for other extra-curricular clubs and organizations.

MONK MAKES CHOICE: Destination U. of Indianapolis

Recent Churubusco graduate Katie Monk signed with the University of Indianapolis for track and field. Monk holds records in discus at the Fort Wayne Northrop Sectional as well as a regional records. She was the state runner up in discus in 2014 and also competed in shot put at the state meet.

5K WALK/RUN: Benefit Tim Hearld scholarship fund

COLUMBIA CITY — The Whitley County Community Foundation is hosting a 5K run to benefit a local scholarship fund. The inTIMidatory 5K walk/run will be held Saturday, Aug. 2, at 8 a.m., with registration starting at 7 a.m.
The race will be held at Columbia City High School, and all proceeds will benefit the Tim Hearld Memorial Scholarship fund.

DOWNTOWN DRIBBLIN': Sheckler takes trophy

The Columbia City Main Street Association brought back the Big G’s 3-on-3 Tournament to downtown Columbia City this weekend. The tourney hosted 11 teams, capped off with a win by Team Sheckler: Brent Sheckler, Doug Sheckler, Caleb Sheckler and Greg Bockelman — all of Whitley County. See a photo of the winning team on Page A10.

Trucks and tractors put to the test at event

COLUMBIA CITY — Sounds of revving engines and the smell of exhaust filled the Grandstand Sunday during the Truck and Tractor Pull at the Whitley County 4-H Fair.

It was Matt Linnemeir that took first place at the 6500 Gas Modified class, after Jason Oliver tried twice to push his lime-green Chevy past the mark.
