2013 LEADERS OF TOMORROW: Shelby Smiley
Editor’s note: All three Whitley County high school principals were asked to nominate three students who they deemed up and coming leaders. Each student was asked a series of questions and will be highlighted during the next week. A boy and girl will be selected by The Post & Mail as the overall Leaders of Tomorrow.SOUTH WHITLEY — Shelby Smiley is a junior at Whitko High School.Q: What activities are you involved in at school or within the community?A: “I am involved in student council, SADD, SADD Officer Team, plays, musicals, Gospel Choir, Kosciusko Youth Leadership Academy (KYLA), Science Academic Team and National Honor Society (NHS).”Q: What groups or organizations have you volunteered with?A: “Through KYLA I have completed over 10 hours raising over 100 towels. When I went down to HOBY Indiana at Butler University, I spent four hours wrapping Christmas boxes for kids, recording my voice reading children’s books for kids at Riley’s Hospital, and decorating bags for the Relay for Life Run. Personally, I have volunteered at the animal shelter. Through NHS, I have raked leaves for the community and have completed numerous volunteer hours with school activities.
