November 19, 2013

CHURUBUSCO — A Churubusco man died Tuesday afternoon when he crashed his vehicle after fleeing police.

At approximately 1:54 p.m., Churubusco Town Marshal Mike Engle was attempting to pull over Tristan Bender, 26, who was allegedly driving at a high rate of speed on County Road 150 N., near Johnson Road.

Police say Bender was attempting to elude Engle, when he drove left of center, going off the north side of the road where he struck a tree head-on.

Police say Bender wasn't wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. He was transported to Parkview Regional Medical Center by helicopter, but was pronounced dead a short time later.

Indiana State Police Sergeant Aaron Cook, who is investigating the case, said it is not yet known whether drugs or alcohol were involved.

The crash remains under investigation.
