COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County Consolidated Schools has an alternative method of teaching – should it be necessary for students.
It’s known as the TROY (Teaching and Reaching Our Youth) Center, located in the former Etna-Troy school facility, 4905 N -550 W, rural Columbia City.
A student attending the center has to be referred from his or her attending school. The program is different for every individual; it can be to graduate, to continue education or to simply provide an environment to work on assignments, depending on the situation.
“It truly is an alternative method of learning for those that may not be succeeding in our normal school system,” said WCCS Superintendent Dr. Pat O’Connor.
“It’s a option when there is no other option available. These students would be out of school.”
Results and progress for the TROY Center were reported at the WCCS board meeting this week.
For the 2010-2011 school year, WCCS had 24 students enrolled in the program. Of the 24, 10 remained at the center for the first trimester of the 2011-2012 school year.
