Annabelle â€śBelleâ€ť Washburn, 74, died Aug. 9, 2012, at her home in Lakeland, Fla. where she had lived since 2008.Â She was born Sept. 5, 1937, in Kansas City, Mo., to Joseph and Beatrice Jenkinson, who later moved to Fort Wayne and Columbia City.
A graduate of Columbia City High School and Indiana University, she was a member of Kappa Delta sorority. She lived in California for 30 years (Atherton, Redwood City and Petaluma) before moving to Indianapolis in 2001.
While in Indianapolis, she volunteered in the Newborn Unit at Riley Childrenâ€™s Hospital and at the Indianapolis Museum of Art where she helped in the gardens and greenhouse, led tours of the gardens and Lilly House and participated in the IMAâ€™s Horticultural Society. She also completed training to become a Master Gardener. She loved reading, travel to Italy, crossword puzzles, opera, her friends, her family and her dog, Maddy.
Surviving relatives include a son, David (Trish) Washburn of San Rafael, Calif.; daughter, Elizabeth (Brett) Suckow of Lakeland, Fla.; granddaughter, Sarah Neal of Lakeland, Fla; sister, Margaret Hile of Fort Wayne; niece, Laura Hile of Indianapolis and nephew Matt (Melissa) Hile of Columbia City.Â
A memorial service has been plannedÂ for 2 p.m. Friday at Smith Funeral Home Coach Room in Columbia City. In March 2013, family and friends will gather in California to celebrate her life.
