Arthur Keister, 88
Arthur L. Keister, 88, of Burr Oak, died at 5:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at his home. He was born April 21, 1924 in Noble County, a son of Thurlo and Venis (Winebrenner) Keister. He graduated from Wolf Lake High School in 1942 and was a member of the ’42 basketball team.After graduation, he served in the U.S. Army for three years during World War II with tours in Alaska and India. A farmer, he worked for International Harvestor in Fort Wayne, retiring in 1978. He loved farming and his wonderful family.On May 31, 1947, he was united in marriage to Betty J. Brackney. They made their home in Merriam for nine years, moving to their farm in Burr Oak in 1956.He was a member of Merriam Christian Chapel Church. Surviving relatives include his wife, Betty; two children, Daniel R. (Mary) Keister and Jane (Harold) Weaver, all of Albion; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and a brother, Lester “Pete” Keister of Albion.He was preceded in death by a son and daughter-in-law, Nick (Pam) Keister; a brother, Calvin Keister and a sister, Naomi Gaff.The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Merriam Christian Chapel, 3985 South U.S. 33, with visitation one hour prior at the church. The visitation will also be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in Christian Chapel Cemetery, Merriam with military honors presented.Preferred memorials are to Merriam Christian Chapel Church.
