BASEBALL: Whitko downs ’Busco, 10-8

CHURUBUSCO — Facing an 8-7 deficit going into the final inning, Whitko scored three runs to win 10-8 at Churubusco Wednesday.

One of the three 7th-innintg runs was scored by Wes Gensch, who led the game with 1.000 hitting, two runs and three RBIs. On the defensive end, Gensch got the save, closing out the game with no hits in the final inning.

Whitko took a 2-1 lead in the first frame. Ethan Nicodemus scored the first run off an RBI by Gensch, then Gensch was batted in by Austin Mort. Churubusco’s Alan Meeks scored off a Whitko error, 1-of-5 the Wildcats had on the night.

Eagle Cody Schaefer tied the score at two in the second inning on a single by Hayden Kilgore. Whitko’s Colin Nicodemus scored off a sacrifice fly by Ethan Nicodemus in the third frame, and Gensch knocked in teammate Ryan Weigold

’Busco’s Kody Poyser scored off another RBI by Simmons, making the score 4-3 going into the fourth inning.

Both Colin and Ethan Nicodemus scored in the fifth, extending the lead to 6-3.

But Churubusco battled back in the bottom of the frame with three runs to tie the game at six.

Whitko’s Riley Cokl scored off a single by Josh Kessie, but the Eagles answered with two runs by Poyser and Alan Meeks.

Starting the final inning with an 8-7 deficit, the Wildcats scored off of two wild pitches and a sacrifice fly by Zach Snep to win 10-8 over the Eagles, knocking them to 0-2 on the season, and getting their first win (1-1).

Hayden Kilgore opened the game for Churubusco with five strike-outs and eight hits in four innings. Corey Sarrazin had two strike-outs and three hits in three innings for the Eagles.

Whitko is back in action Friday at Lakeland and Churubusco travels to Woodlan tonight.
