Bernice L. Sheets, 84, of Columbia City, died at 9:24 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010 at Parkview Whitley Hospital where she was admitted Dec. 11.
She was born Jan. 1, 1926 in Seymour, a daughter of Louis William Henry and Martha Lisetta Elisa (Petering) Terkhorn. She graduated from Seymour High School and received her degree in nursing from Lutheran School of Nursing in 1947.
On Sept. 27, 1947 she was united in marriage to Harold E. â€śGeneâ€ť Sheets. They made their home in Columbia City. Mr. Sheets died Nov. 29, 2006.
A registered nurse, she was employed at Lutheran Hospital, Linvill Clinic and retired from Whitley County Memorial Hospital in 1988.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and a former girl scout leader.
Surviving relatives include three children, Barbara J. (Jerry) Lahrman of Columbia City, Dean (Barbara) Sheets of Big Lake and Connie J. (Mark) Forrester of Columbia City; six grandchildren, Jeffrey and Brian Lahrman, Travis and Tim Sheets, Jennifer Wilcoxson and Rhiannon Cormany; 10 great grandchildren; two brothers, Alvin Terkhorn and Victor Terkhorn, both of Seymour.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister, Ernest Terkhorn, Harold Terkhorn and Wilma Terkhorn.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in South Park Annex Cemetery. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
