A visit to The Little Dooey is more than a place to get great barbecue, it is an event.
And the state of Mississippi would agree. The Little Dooey in Starkville was listed in third place for Best Barbeque in the recent Best of Mississippi readership poll, in the July/August issue of Mississippi Magazine. The Little Dooey is one of seven Starkville restaurants receiving placement in the poll.
“We would like to say thank you to our loyal customers and dedicated staff for making us THE Best barbeque place in Mississippi,” said Lauren Carmichael of The Little Dooey.
As expected, Starkville residents and customers from around the state love the pulled pork, but there are a lot of Dooey fans who would say the fried catfish and many of the side items are close seconds.
“By far our most popular items are the pulled pork plates and the sandwich combos, Carmichael said. “Starkville residents line up every Friday night for our fried catfish and pulled pork. Some other favorites include our fried green tomatoes, coleslaw and baked beans.”
Carmichael said The Little Dooey was very proud to have celebrated their 25th anniversary in April.
“We wouldn’t have been able to do it with out our loyal customers and employees,” Carmichael said. “We look forward to seeing our regulars come in for lunch and dinner everyday.”
One of the keys to the success of the original Little Dooey’s has been the dedication of loyal employees.
“Several of our employees have been at The Little Dooey since day one, and others have worked for us 15 plus years,” Carmichael said. “The same lady that made our homemade sides 25 years ago still makes them today. The atmosphere at the Little Dooey is one of a large family, our employees and customers together have helped to mold the restaurant into what it is today.”
The restaurant is owned and operated by Barry and Margaret Wood of Starkville. The Columbus restaurant is operated by their son.
And next month, The Little Dooey will be coming to Oxford!
The Little Dooey will be opening a new location in Oxford in August. The store will be located at 1414 Jackson Ave. West. Look for that familiar “taste of home” when traveling “up north.”
For “The Little Dooey experience,” stop by the original restaurant at 100 Fellowship Street in Starkville. Place a take out order by calling 323-6094. They are open 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
