Betty J. McManama, 89, a resident of Columbia City, died at 5:35 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at Millerâ€™s Merry Manor where she had been a resident for the past month.
She was born Feb. 10, 1924, in Washington Township, a daughter of the late Clarence and Osie (Huffman) Juillerat.
Her formative years were spent in Washington Township. She graduated from Washington Center High School in 1942.
On Dec. 31, 1942, she was united in marriage to Don E. McManama. They made their home in Washington Township. In the fall of 1996, they moved to their home in Columbia City. Mr. McManama died Feb. 11, 1997.
She was a full-time homemaker raising their children. She was a member of the Columbia City United Methodist Church where she participated in many womenâ€™s groups. She loved and enjoyed her children, grandchildren and her many friends. An avid gardener, she raised both flowers and vegetables. She enjoyed the seasons of the year.
Surviving relatives include a son, Nicholas J. (Mary) McManama; two daughters, Cheryl (Stephen) Hollenbaugh of Columbia City and Marsha (Terry) Cartwright of LaOtto; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Laurie McManama; two brothers, Tom and Gene Juillerat and a sister, Garnet Schannep.
The funeral service will be held at noon, Saturday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City, with Associate Pastor Kent Lundy of Columbia City United Methodist Church officiating. The burial will be in the South Whitley Cemetery. The visitation will be 10 a.m. until the service Saturday at the funeral home.
