BIG SNOW POSSIBLE: U.S. 6 seems to be dividing line for snow total of up to 15 inches

The National Weather Service says a winter storm could drop more than a foot of snow on far northern Indiana and bring wind-whipped blowing and drifting snow.

Snow was falling across much of Indiana on Thursday afternoon but only lightly in Indianapolis and points further south.

The weather service says snow will become heavy at times tonight in northern Indiana where accumulations of nearly 15 inches are forecast by Friday afternoon north of U.S. 6, which runs through the northernmost tier of Indiana counties. Four to eight inches of snow are forecast south of the highway, with snowfall amounts declining the further south one goes.

Strong northwest winds will significantly reduce visibilities with blowing and drifting snow.
