Births on the rise in Whitley County

January 21, 2014

WHITLEY COUNTY— A trend of more baby births in Whitley County that began in 2012 continued last year.

Whitley County had 225 births as of late December in 2012, which compared to a figure of 188 in 2011.

In 2013, the increase continued, as the county health department reported a figure of 295 as of Dec. 13, 2013.

Last year, Joann Miller of the Whitley County Health Department attributed that growth to healthcare professionals at Parkview Whitley Hospital attracting patients.

The death rate for the county held steady, with numbers approximately in the 230 range for every year this decade.

Some citizens of the county are born elsewhere and move back to the area, which follows the trend of a population increase.

Columbia City had a growth rate of 23.64 percent from 2000 to 2010.
The estimate for 2012 was 8,831, up from 8,775 in 2011 and 8,750 as of the 2010 census.
