SOUTH WHITLEY — The best spellers of the county elementary and middle schools converged on South Whitley Elementary School Thursday evening to compete for the title Whitley County Spelling Bee Champion.
The title went to Rozlyn Bishop, daughter of Victor and Jacki Bishop of South Whitley, a fifth grader at South Whitley Elementary School. She faced some tough competition, though, with Lenah Beck of Northern Heights Elementary, daughter of Jeff and Andrea Beck, holding on through nine rounds. It was “narcoleptic” that was her downfall. Bishop spelled “Kelvin” and “quotient” to attain the title.
Other spellers were: Sam Boneff, eighth grader from Churubusco Junior High; Eric Burkholder, fifth grader from Coesse Elementary School; Samina Qureshi, eighth grader from Indian Springs Middle School; Lena Owen, fifth grader from Little Turtle Elementary School; Taylor Ruby, fifth grader from Mary Raber Elementary School; and Ashlie Martz, fifth grader from Churubusco Elementary School.
Bishop will go on to compete in the regional spelling bee in Fort Wayne at 10 a.m. March 12 in Auer Auditorium at IPFW, and if she wins there, will compete in Washington D.C. at the National spelling bee.
