    Porter Jackson “Jack” Adams, 86, of rural Whitley County, died at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at his home near Larwill.
    Born on July 6, 1921, in the same home he died in, he was a son of William and Florence (Haas) Adams. His formative years were spent in the Larwill area where he attended school and graduated from Larwill High School in 1941.
    On June 30, 1942, he entered the U.S. Army where he served with the 759 Railroad Battalion during World War II. He was honorably discharged on Sept. 13, 1945.
    On Feb. 13, 1943, he was united in marriage to June Eloise Miller. They have always made their home in the Larwill area.
    Upon his discharge from the Army, he began as fireman and was promoted to engineer on the Pennsylvania Railroad. Later it became Pen Central, Conrail and Amtrak. He retired as an engineer in 1980.
    He was a member of St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church and American Legion Post 98, both in Columbia City.
    Survivors include his wife, June; five children, Judith (Fernando) Villarreal of Sparks, Nev.; John (Barbara) Adams of Columbia City; Jayma (Randy) Hanauer of Charlotte, N.C.; James (Stephanie) Adams of Hallsville, Texas, and Janet (Munther) Qubain of Raleigh, N.C.; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.    
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Francis Ruckman.
    Mass of Christian Burial is at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church, 315 S. Line St., Columbia City, with Father Larry Kramer as officiant. Burial is at Catholic Cemetery, Columbia City. Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home in Columbia City, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.
    For those who wish, memorials may be directed to Parkview Home Health & Hospice of Whitley County or St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church.
