After almost half a century, Coney Island's famed 'Astroland Park' shut its doors on Sunday, September 7, 2008 following a dispute with developer Thor Equities. Carol Albert, whose family has owned the amusement park since its opening in 1962, sold the acreage under Astroland to Thor Equities for $30million in 2006. Albert was hoping to negotiate a two-year lease with the developer in order to guarantee job security for her 300 employees.
