WHITLEY COUNTY â€” Boys basketball officially began in Whitley County Wednesday.
In the Columbia City-Whitko rivalry game, the Eagles downed the Wildcats in South Whitley, 49-31.
Churubuscoâ€™s squad dropped an overtime game to Adams Central, after a last-second 3-pointer at the buzzer to win, 58-56.
At Whitko, Wildcat Dylan Cumberland was the leading scorer, tallying 16 points for the â€™Cats. His teammate, Nate Walpole, was Whitkoâ€™s second-leading scorer.
Sophomore Brachen Hazen led Columbia Cityâ€™s offensive charge with 15 points, followed by Mason Coverstone, who knocked down two 3-pointers in the first quarter, en route to his 14 points.
The rivalry game was a closely-played match in the first half. Columbia City had a slim one-point advantage at the end of the first quarter.
The Eagles outscored Whitko 8-3 in the second quarter to hold an 18-14 lead at the half. Columbia City pulled away in the third and fourth quarters, bested Whitko 31-17, leading to the 49-31 final score.
Both teams are back in action Saturday. Columbia City hosts Warsaw and Whitko travels to Leo for 7:30 p.m. games.
Churubusco dropped a hard-fought home battle to Adams Central.
The Eagles held a one-point, 12-11 lead at the end of the first quarter, and extended the advantage to four points at the half, 22-18.
Adams Central closed the gap at the end of the third quarter, 34-32, and the regulation time ran out with the score tied at 45. Adams Central scored on the buzzer-beater to win, 58-56.
Churubusco is back in action Friday, Dec. 6 at Westview.View more articles in:
