CHURUBUSCO â€” Smith-Green Community Schools reviewed the importance of School Resource Officers (SRO) at Mondayâ€™s business meeting.
Last year was the first time the district had an SRO in the building.
Churubusco Police Officer Chad Fulkerson worked for the district in that capacity last year. While noting the importance of the SRO position, Superintendent Galen Mast said the district was in a tight place regarding funding.
The district has applied for a matching grant that will fund the SRO for the building, Mast explained.
However, the grant winner will not be announced until Nov. 1.
â€śDo we take the plunge, and bring Officer Fulkerson on to start the year assuming weâ€™ll get the grant?â€ť Mast asked.
Mast noted that the budget for this year was expected to be lower. He also pointed out the districtâ€™s goal of â€śsafety firstâ€ť for its students.
â€śOur money is dwindling,â€ť he said. â€śWe want our students safe, cared for and learning â€” but do we take the plunge financially?â€ť
