Building cleared for fire

COLUMBIA CITY — Several people were evacuated from their homes Monday morning after a Columbia City apartment building caught fire.

Firefighters were called to Denihan Plaza Apartments, 600 N. Walnut Street, after a resident found smoke in the apartment at approximately 6 a.m. Monday.

Columbia City’s Police Department helped evacuate the entire building for safety reasons, but Fire Chief Tom LaRue said the fire only affected two apartments.

LaRue said there was smoke coming from the attic. He reported minimal damage and no injuries.

LaRue said the fire remains under investigation.
