COLUMBIA CITY — November 30, 2014, is the final date for Burnworth Pool, the community swimming pool in Columbia City.
After weighing all options and viewing several surveys, the city plans to cease operations and maintenance of Burnworth Pool — shutting down the 52-year-old facility.
“We’ll start looking into a new facility,” said Columbia City Park Director Mark Green. “If everything comes together like we hope, there won’t be a gap without a pool. That’s the goal.”
The decision to close the pool came after Columbia City Park Board members voted unanimously at its meeting Monday to opt-out of its lease agreement with the Whitley County Consolidated School Corporation for the operations and maintenance of Burnworth Pool.
However, between now and 2014, should Burnworth Pool encounter maintenance issues requiring more than $20,000 to repair, the facility could close earlier than planned.
“If that happens, then the park board has the right to cease operations where they see fit,” said Mayor Daniel.
Green said the park board has also announced the formation of an Aquatics Facility Task Force.
This task force will include approximately 15 members from the community, government and school system — including Mayor Daniel and Green.
According to Mayor Daniel, the city hopes to begin task force meetings after the beginning of the year.
