LAGRANGE — A North East Corner Conference doubleheader took Churubusco basketball on the road Friday night.
A total of five points made up two wins over Lakeland for the Eagles.
The boys team (9-4, 6-1) held their second-place spot in the NECC one game back of Westview.
While the boys’ held off the Lakers 46-44 for their sixth win in the NECC, the Lady Eagles were busy in the early game extending their winning streak to three.
After an overtime period, Churubusco (6-13, 3-7 NECC) came away with the win 50-47 over the Lady Lakers (3-15, 2-8 NECC)
Along with wins over Central Noble and South Adams, the Lady Eagles are on their longest winning streak since 2005.
Ironically, it was that 2005 season where Churubusco girls’ basketball last had more than four wins.
The win over the Lakers is No. 6 for the Lady Eagles this season — just one back of the 2005 Lady Eagles.
A back and forth battle in the first quarter had the Lady Eagles lead 20-19 at halftime.
A strong third quarter scoring advantage 13-8, pushed the Churubusco lead to six points heading into the final period.
That was how many points Lakeland outscored Churubusco in the fourth quarter (15-9) to force overtime.
With the help of three Lady Eagles in double figures, Churubusco beat Lakeland 8-5 in the extra period.
Haleigh Gross tied Heather Monk for team-high 12 points. Chandler Blake was the third of that trio scoring 11 points on 3-of-6 shooting from three-point range.
The two NECC foes were deadlocked in most categories but Churubusco took a big advantage in offensive rebounding 14-9.
