CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco’s baseball team played host to Northeast Corner Conference opponent Fremont in a battle of Eagles.

In a game that saw good pitching from both teams, the deciding factor was host Churubusco’s inability to string together hits with runners in scoring position throughout the contest.

The Churubusco Eagles stranded eight base runners and fell by a 6-3 score to the visiting Fremont Eagles.

Churubusco pitcher Brent Simmons set the Fremont side down in order in the top of the first inning on a ground out, a fly out and one of his seven strikeouts recorded for the game.

Churubusco threatened in the bottom of the first with leadoff batter Kody Poyser drawing a walk. Poyser went to second on a Fremont error that let Simmons reach safely.

Poyser and Simmons executed a double steal to put runners at second and third with just one out, but the Eagles were unable to push a run across, with a fly out and a strikeout ending the Busco threat.

“It’s something that has happened to us the last three games,” said Churubusco Head Coach Mark Grove. “We have seen three of the best pitchers and one of our issues is that our kids will not with people in scoring position shorten their swings up , and their taking big ugly swings and we are leaving runners in scoring position.”
