FREMONT ‚ÄĒ Churubusco girls basketball got down early Friday and was never able to recover, losing to Fremont Lady Eagles 49-31.
The ‚ÄėBusco Lady Eagles kept it close in the first quarter, scoring nine points to Fremont‚Äôs 12.
‚ÄúWe played well in the first quarter,‚ÄĚ Churubusco Head Coach Jamie Perlich said. ‚ÄúThen we started struggling defensively.
‚ÄúWhen we play well on defense the rest falls together. We started getting tired and started standing up instead of moving our feet on defense and our shots stopped falling.‚ÄĚ
The Fremont Lady Eagles pulled away in the second, outscoring ‚ÄėBusco 16-5. Churubusco was down 28-14 at halftime.
Picking up where it left off, Fremont jumped out to a 12-3 scoring advantage to start the third period. With two minutes left in the quarter, Fremont led 40-17.
The ‚ÄėBusco Lady Eagles finished the third quarter with two successful free throws and followed them with a Jacey Keener 3-pointer. Churubusco got a turnover as time expired, but were still trailing 40-22.
The final period began the same way the third ended ¬≠‚ÄĒ with the ‚ÄėBusco Lady Eagles, specifically Haleigh Gross ‚ÄĒ hitting from beyond the arc. Gross led the team in scoring and rebounds with 13-and-6, respectively.
‚ÄúShe (Gross) got herself back into the game tonight after being hurt for the last few games,‚ÄĚ Perlich said. ‚ÄúShe shot the ball with confidence and scored some good points for us.‚ÄĚ
Following a steal on Fremont‚Äôs next possession, Gross scored a basket to pull the team within 13 with six minutes left in the game. Fremont responded with five unanswered, one basket coming off an offensive rebound. The Fremont Lady Eagles pulled down 21 on the offensive glass and 51 total against ‚ÄėBusco‚Äôs 29.
A referee then corrected a shooting foul error, giving ‚ÄėBusco an extra attempt; Keener converted two of three from the charity stripe. Churubusco then missed its next four free throws and were 6-for-18 overall from 15 feet.
‚ÄúWe struggled from the foul line for some reason,‚ÄĚ Perlich said. ‚ÄúWhen were down like that, anytime we get the chance to get to the free-throw line we need to hit it.‚ÄĚ
After trading buckets in the final minutes, the game ended by a final score of 49-31. Gross was trailed closely by Monk who had six points and five rebounds.
