ALBION — The Churubusco Lady Eagle basketball team, fresh off a win over South Adams that broke an eight-game losing streak, traveled to Northeast Corner Conference foe Central Noble with the two-fold intent of extending their own winning streak and keeping the 0-17 Lady Cougars winless.

It took every minute of regulation and four minutes of overtime for ‘Busco to accomplish both feats in a come-from-behind 49-45 win.
The Lady Eagles fell behind early as they were unable to get inside against Central Noble on offense, and were able to manage only a single field goal in the first quarter.

The Lady Cougars on the other hand were able to hit 7-of-10 shots from the field in the first period, including three shots from behind the 3-point line, taking a 17-5 lead at the end of the first quarter.
“It was Senior Night for them, so we knew they would play tough,” said Lady Eagle Head Coach Jamie Perlich. “To start out tonight our defense was just a step behind.

The second quarter saw Churubusco play Central Noble even despite only hitting two field goals, both coming from Svannah Labenz who tallied six points in the quarter. The Lady Eagles hit 7-for-9 from the free-throw line in the second quarter and 10-13 in the first half to help keep them in the ball game.

While trailing 28-16 going into the third quarter, ‘Busco stepped up their defensive pressure and with that pushed the Lady Cougars out farther on the floor, and suddenly the open shots for the host dried up.

The Lady Eagles continued to close the gap, with Labenz hitting a basket and a 3-pointer that brought the ‘Busco within one at 36-35.

The Lady Eagle woes at the free throw line continued. Haleigh Gross missed two free-throws with 33.8 seconds left and the team trailing 40-38, but Monk snagged the rebound and put in the tying basket.

Churubusco took its first lead and control during the opening seconds of the overtime period when Pulley knocked down a three-pointer that put the Lady Eagles up 43-40. A basket by Montana Martin gave ‘Busco a five-point cushion. A Central Noble three closed the gap to 47-45, but two Labenz free throws iced the contest at the final 49-45 score.

Labenz led all scorers with 15 points, with Gross adding 11 and Monk eight.

The Lady Eagles return to action Friday when they host Lakeland in a boy-girl NECC contest.
