GARRETT— A young girls basketball team trying to get its bearings on the first night out ran into a hot scorer, and team.
Churubusco’s girls basketball team fell to Garrett Tuesday, 69-40.
The Lady Railroaders were led by senior Brandi Dawson, who scored 31 points overall, including 14 in the first quarter.
The defeat spoiled the coaching debut for Churubusco’s Dustin Beucler, who had his first game at the helm of the Lady Eagles’ varsity squad.
“We’re trying to get better as a team, we’re trying to do the little things, and it’s hard to open up against a team like Garrett,” he said.
A flurry of Lady Railroader baskets put ’Busco behind early. With just more than three minutes left in the first quarter, Garrett had a 16-1 lead, and Dawson was already in double-digits with points.
Churubusco went into halftime behind 37-15, but the team did not fold.
The Lady Eagles rallied with 25 second-half points, and kept hustling until the final moments, a fact not lost on their coach.
