BUSTED: Speeding in school zone leads to pot bust

May 4, 2012

COESSE — A routine traffic stop for speeding Thursday morning led Indiana State Police to a drug bust in Columbia City.
David Allen Potter, 18, from Columbia City and Morgan Richard Willingham, 20, from Philadelphia, were arrested on charges of possession of marijuana and reckless possession of paraphernalia. They were booked into the Whitley County Jail.
According to ISP Public Information Officer Ron Galaviz, ISP Master Trooper Robert Jeffers clocked a vehicle speeding on U.S. 30 between county roads 500 E. and 600 E. The area, near Coesse Elementary School, is designated as a school zone. The vehicle, according to Galaviz, was traveling 57 miles per hour in the posted 40 mile-per-hour zone.
“After stopping the vehicle, Jeffers smelled an odor of marijuana coming from the passenger compartment of the (vehicle) as he was speaking with the driver,” said Galaviz.
A K-9 unit was then called in and a search warrant was issued for a residence in the 1400 block of E. Bridget Lane in Columbia City.
Galaviz reports that during the search of the residence, “items commonly associated with an indoor growing operation were allegedly located and seized as evidence. Also located and seized were approximately four ounces of marijuana, marijuana seeds, and psilocybin mushrooms.”
