Carey D. Landis, 101

Carey D. Landis, 101, of Mentone, died at 12:55 a.m. Sunday, March 24, 2013, at Miller’s Merry Manor of Wabash.
He was born Nov. 18, 1911, in Kosciusko County to John and Sadie (Dirck) Landis.
He was married to Jessie F. Thomas Aug. 1, 1953, in Winona Lake. She preceded him in death Sept. 30, 1979.
Carey had been a school bus driver for Talma School, as well as a carpenter and an electrician. He worked at the hardware store in Mentone and farmed in his early years.
Carey was a 1930 graduate of Talma High School. He was a member of the Packerton United Methodist Church. He was a Mentone Volunteer Fireman for more than 25 years where he was named Fireman of the Year, as well as Kosciusko County Fireman of the Year. He was a lifetime member of the Indiana Volunteer Fireman Association. He enjoyed fishing and loved sports, especially going to basketball and baseball games.
Surviving relatives include a son, Wayne L. (Beth) Landis of Mentone; and two grandsons, Zarchary and Jeremiah Mentone. Carey was preceded in death by his wife, Jessie; and sister, Velma Shafer.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, at King Memorial Home, 101 N. Tucker St., Mentone. Pastor Bill Wood will officiate. Visitation hours will be 3 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, at King Memorial Home. During visitation hours, at 7 p.m., a Fireman’s Memorial Service will take place. Burial will be in Mentone Cemetery, Mentone.
