Catherine Norris, 89

Catherine Marie “Katie” Norris, 89, of South Whitley, died at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010 at the Peabody Home, North Manchester where she had been a resident since July.

She was born Dec. 14, 1920 in Collamer, a daughter of John and Maude (Poland) Tschantz. Her formative years were spent in the Collamer area where she attended Collamer grade school until 6th grade, then South Whitley schools. She graduated from South Whitley High School in 1940. She was the president of the student council.

On June 26, 1943 she married Merritt Leroy Norris. They made their lifelong home in South Whitley. Mr. Norris died Jan. 9, 2000.

In addition to being a homemaker, she assisted her husband with his insurance agency that the couple began in 1945.

Her memberships included United Methodist Church of South Whitley where she served for many years on the funeral dinner committee and enjoyed making decorative pillows for Riley Hospital for Children.

Surviving relatives include three sons, Richard (Elise) Norris of Indianapolis, twins, Dennis (Deb) Norris of South Whitley and Darrell Norris of Carmel; grandchildren, Stephen (Shelly) Norris of Huntsville, Ala., Mark (Elizabeth) Norris of Cincinnati, Ohio, Travis (Jennifer) Norris of Terre Haute; step-grandchildren, Kevin (Stephanie) Ogan of Wabash and Amy Ogan of Lafayette; 10 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Betty (Lawrence) Roberts of South Whitley and Jeannie (Ralph) Dailey of Huntington.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Dorothy Watson, Peggy Schaffer and Ruth Walter; and two brothers, Dale Tschantz and Don Tschantz.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church of South Whitley. The burial will be in the South Whitley Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Smith & Sons Miller Chapel, South Whitley and one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
