’Cats advance on 9th-inning balk

June 2, 2014

The Whitko Wildcats had to rally from two runs down in the bottom of the seventh inning just to tie the score, but then in the bottom of the ninth, with a runner on third, the home standing Wildcats goaded the Lakeland pitcher into a balk sending the winning run across for a 4-3 win that propels the Wildcats into Saturdays semifinal of the Whitko IHSAA Sectional Baseball tournament.

Whitko pitcher Tanner Gaff struggled early in the game with his control getting the ball up in the zone, and walking the first Lakeland batter on four pitches.

Gaff gave up a long double to Laker third baseman Derrick Dunn that drove in the first run of the game.

The Lakers threatened to add more in the top of the first but a strike out, a force at second and another ground out got the Wildcats out with no more damage.
