’Cats fall in 12-frame battle to Norwell

OSSIAN —Whitko’s baseball team lost in 12 innings to Norwell (7-1) Wednesday night in Ossian.

After taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning, the Knights worked their way back in the ballgame to tie the score at four in the seventh inning.

The Wildcats went scoreless for six frames, and Norwell finally scored a run at the bottom of the 12th to end the game, 5-4.

Wyatt Wolf was the first to cross home plate Wednesday, scoring off a double by Colin Nicodemus. Nicodemus was close behind, getting the Wildcats’ second run from a single by Ryan Weigold.

Ethan Nicodemus also scored in the first by a fielder’s choice be Wes Gensch.

The Knights didn’t score until the third frame, with Spencer Newell taking advantage of one of three Whitko errors. The Wildcats scored their fourth and final run in the fifth, as Riley Cokl scored off a single by Ethan Nicodemus.

Despite a six-inning effort to hold on for the win, Norwell scored in the fifth, sixth and seventh frames to tie the game at four and send the night into extra innings.

Whitko used four pitchers, led by Wes Gensch with six strike-outs and one hit in the first four innings.

Whitko fell to 3-2 and travels to Garrett Saturday for a double header, starting at 11 a.m.
