Cavs’ Scott Kreiger changes sides

June 13, 2012

FORT WAYNE — With four state titles and 14 years under his belt as the Head Girls Basketball Coach at Canterbury, former Columbia City High School Hoopster Scott Kreiger announced yesterday that he would be the boys coach for the Cavs.

As the girls coach, Kreiger was 251-88. He won state titles in 2008, ‘09, ‘10 and ‘12. This season, he was the Indiana Girls All-Star team’s coach.

At 47, Kreiger has spent 28 years coaching basketball. But that’s only fitting, as the son of long-time Columbia City Girls Basketball Coach Wayne Kreiger, who recently joined his son at Canterbury and retired from teaching at CCHS this spring.

Scott will be coaching Austin Hatch, a Michigan recruit who was seriously injured in a plane crash last summer. Hatch is expected to return this season for his senior year.

The girls team will return 4-of-5 starters, including former Whitko Middle School Darby Maggard, who led the Lady Cavs in scoring in the state championship game against Northeast Dubois.

Canterbury won the state title by 10 points, 64-54. Kreiger won nine sectionals, five regionals and four semi-state titles.
